While on my quest to find a good 22, I came across as a Browning Challenger (made in Belgium) at a local pawn shop for $400. It has an approx 6" barrel with adjustable rear sight. It is in 95% because of a little surface rust the size of a pin point by the barrel. The bluing is very nice and the mechanisms are nice and tight. What does everyone think.

I really like the way it handles and that it is older and possibly a collectable. I like fine firearms.

The Challenger was a great plinker put out by Browning. $400 is about the going price for them today. You could probably get a Challenger II (made in Utah) for about a $100 less. Though cosmetic wise they don't equal a Belgium model I think they shoot just as good, but I prefer the 1911 grip style of the Challenger II over the Luger grip style of the Belgium Challenger.

Thanks for the reply. After looking on line and seeing about extra magazines, scope stuff, etc, I think I'm gonna pass on this one, but I would still like to own one as it seems really well made and balanced better than just about any other 22 I've ever held. The bluing was phenomenal and the gun was in fantastic shape. I just hope 1-2 years down the road I'm not kicking myself for not picking this little gem up.:banghead:

I have a Browning Medalist, which was the Challenger with a heavier barrel and target-style stocks.

I was fortunate enough to be able to find a pair of functioning magazines for $150. Does that sound outrageous? They're normally a bit over $100 each.

The trigger is a work of art, by the way. If I could find stocks for the pistol to fit my hand, I'd leave my pre-agreement Smith & Wesson model 41 in the safe. I've been trying to make stocks for some while, albeit without a shred of success.

I have a 1978 Challenger II in very good condition that I'm thinking of selling. Bluing is beautiful, wood is excellent. Only real sigs of wear is that the magazine looks well used. What is a good price to put on it for a private sale?
