We've been eating beef only from Coleman for years now, but this is still real scary...

This is political because it bears on our willingness to trust our own Government.

January 20, 2003 - A Worker from the Mad Cow Meat Plant Speaks Out

They Are Lying About Your Food - by DAVE LOUTHAN

My name is Dave and I work at Vern's Moses Lake Meats.

I did until the day the mad cow test results on the Sunny Dene cow came back positive for BSE. That was Wednesday, December 24. On Friday, December 26, the KXLY news crew was at the end of Vern's driveway, locked out by a cable gate.

The USDA had told the world that the mad cow had been slaughtered here, but it was not in the food chain. A blatant lie.

It was one of many. I walked out with the news crew at lunch time because I can't stand a government cover-up. They asked me "was the cow in the food chain?" I told them of course it was, it's meat. Where else would it be? They asked me if the cow was a downer. I told them no, it was just an old cow.

The USDA had us taking brain stem samples from downers and back door cripples only. Since we only had a few walkers on this trailer full of downers, we just killed her along with them. We took a brain sample from her head because the USDA gives up $10 per sample.

If we would have unloaded her in the pens, we would have never caught the BSE. How many other walkers have BSE? We will never know. The USDA only tested the downers and cripples and only at our plant. We had only been taking brain samples for about a month when we found this one.

When the USDA said no more downers would be slaughtered, they essentially said no more BSE testing would be done. Vern's and every other slaughterhouse kept right on killing and selling Holstein meat from the same area as the mad cow with no BSE testing whatsoever. This is true and easily verifiable.

And just so the folks in Moses Lake don't feel left out, the beef head, tongue, liver, kidneys and tail were sold right here in the Columbia Basin. It's way past time for everybody to stop thinking with their bank accounts and start trying to find a way to stop the spread of BSE.

The minute the USDA found the contaminated cow, they stopped the brain stem collection and testing. Why? Ka-ching! It's the money. Billions.

If you want to be sure you and your family are eating safe meat, demand testing on every beef slaughter. It's quick and easy. Don't eat another piece of meat until you see a sticker that says tested and cleared for BSE on the package. BSE is 100% fatal --- if you or your kids get it, you die a very painful death. It's a slow, wasting disease. It's terrible.

Right now, a lot of people are telling you how safe their beef is, but they don't know if it is or is not without testing. That's their checkbook talking. That rendering plant in Canada wasn't feeding 81 cows, it was feeding thousands of cows. Every second that goes by, more untested beef goes on the dinner plate. If you eat mad cow, you are going to get sick and you are going to die.

Stand up and demand safe meat.

No ranting with this guy.
He seems tired of the corporate and government lies and stood up to let the public know.

Its funny how the media and the government has brainwashed the public to think everytime someone comes out to expose a lie they are labeled part of the tin foil hat brigade.

Those that think the government doesn't lie and cover up raise your hand.

Those that think big business care more about the consumer than the bottom line raise your hands.

Those that live in gun free zones of the US are excluded from raising your hand. You already trusted your Government and look what it got you.

I'll have the steak with a side of steak, please...

This article is total BS. One cow gets sick and people go nuts. The only part of the article that's correct is that it's all about money. But the author has it backwards. The meat industry wants to make a profit, which they can't do if their customers are getting sick or think that they will. Testing their meat for diseases is part of protecting their profits. The conspiracy theories may have been true at the turn of the century(i.e. The Jungle), but in modern times it doesn't hold up...especially given the volume of consumer knowledge. You guys can eat all the veggies you want, I'll stick with our bovine friends.

What causes BSE?

The exact cause of BSE is not known but it is generally accepted by the scientific community that infectious forms of a type of protein, prions, normally found in animals cause BSE. In cattle with BSE, these abnormal prions initially occur in the small intestines and tonsils, and are found in central nervous tissues, such as the brain and spinal cord, and other tissues of infected animals experiencing later stages of the disease.

used to be a cattle rancher. has been on opera which cause a big fight in courts over what opera said during live broadcast. Also spoke to reporters in England during Mad Cow outbreak when they had theyre problems.

prions supposedly leave air bubbles in the brain. scientist dont know exactly what causes alzheimers but people keep on getting it along with cancer, tumors and plenty of other diseases. the exact cause for them being unknown as well though they have a idea of what does.

I am not going to stop eating steak immediately. got it planned for dinner tonight.

Don't eat the cow or the pig. Once your clients tell you what happens in slaugterhouses, you won't either

I've seen the insides of IBP and Excel packing plants in the Texas Panhandle and Kansas. Seen many small M&P plants around Texas.

Hasn't put me off meat yet. Although I do have an aversion to Pizza Inn as a result...

Regarding BSE: I think it's time to stop slaughtering downer cows for human consumption. Too many unknowns, BSE just the one in the headlines now. Science hasn't convinced me of a positive link from BSE to human illness. It is beleived that one must eat the CNS or the Brain to have any chance at contracting illness. Fine, I don't eat offal anyway.

Cook your pigs thoroughly, stick to the muscle cuts of cattle. Enjoy life as a carnivore.

I don't want my dog fed CNS tissue, either, so they should require that these parts not be used in any food product at all - fertilizer, perhaps.

Actually nothing this guy says in in any dissagreement with my knowledge of how beef testing is done. The only animals EVER tested in this country are cattle that are visibly sick and "down". The fact is that a cow can carry mad cow disease for a long time before it ends up lame. How many of them do you think get processed before that ever happens? Heck we dont even have any means of tracking cows in this nation. We know what HERD the infected cow's offspring wound up in. But, we have no IDEA which one it is. So we killed them all. THe fact is i dont really see how ONLY one SINGLE cow gets the disease, where did she get it from?
