I know that the ATF allows you to build your own firearms for personal use. I would think that a shotgun would be the easiest to do for a first project, but I am open to anything.

Does anyone know of plans to build your own firearms, or forums for such things? I did a search here, but had trouble finding a match.

I'd think a STEN-type tubular action, but in Semi Auto would be the easiest repeater. Single shot wise, a smoothbore scatter gun would definately be the easiest.
 
Bill Holmes has a whole group of books on building various types of firearms. He was a machinist/designer for quite a few years. Check out Delta Press or Paladan catalogs. There are several other good books around as well. Access to a mill and a lathe is recommended for ease of fabrication.
 
I lot of guns developed during war times were designed with simplicity as a key factor. The Sten and Liberator jump to mind as two perfect examples. The forum that alarmguy posted has plans for both of these on it, in adition to AR, FAL & AK recievers.

Needless to say, the Liberator and Sten would be much easier, but if you got the time, skill and equipment, very little is unmakeable.

A muzzle loading cannon is both legal and simple.
Of course, it's also large, heavy and would require blackpowder by the pound...:D
 
Building your own AR's and FAL's is pretty easy from parts kits. The only main rules are you cannot assemble any configuration you could not legally buy now.

The lower on the AR and the upper reciever on the FAL are the only parts you'd have to get through an FFL.

If you're talking about machining stuff from scratch you're way out of my leauge... :uhoh:
