It's a personal choice. If I was going to the ghetto, then I might think about wearing one. Going to Wallyworld with the kids on a Saturday afternoon, not so much. My personal opinion is that I would never live in a place where I thought that I needed to wear body armor. If I thought it was that dangerous and I HAD to go, I would want to take my rifle too. (Anybody know if there is actually a law about going out and about with a rifle? )

Bottom line is that one man's paranoid is another man's common sense. I believe in taking reasonable precautions. If time for my ticket to get punched, it's going to happen no matter what I do to prevent it. If you are that worried about getting shot, then start walking places cause you are far more likely to die in a car crash then get shot.

Some states like WA have no laws against open carry. But from what I have read, it is easy to be accused of distrubing the peace or brandishing while openly carrying any firearm. Anyone who is disturbed by an open carry pistol will probably go into convulsions if they see you with a rifle slung over your shoulder. :)

The responses run the gamut, and that supports this:

It's a personal choice.

I suspect that just about everything there is to say on this has been said.
