This is the best seating depth guage I've ever used, it's simple to use and repeats time after time. Wish they were still being made. Firt you get the readind to the rifling, the lock the set screw to lold the setting in case you put too much pressure and the bullet sticks in the lands. Next you put the length rod with bullet in guage, then take the reading over the ends of the total guage. This reading is your -0- no adding or subtracting for the plates. Load you a dummy round for future use, making it .000, .005, .010 whatever you want it to be, by placing it in the guage and reading the total length of the guage. The bottom plates come in different cal.'s and the top plates are bored out to the ogive dia., so you can use different bullets in the same cal. and still use the same -0- as yoy did before. It will also tell you if your throat is becoming erroded. If you check it at a later date after many rounds have been fired the -0- reading will be greater because the bullet will go further into the bore.

Yes the RCBS and Stoney Point (Hornady) work basiclly the same, but if the bullet sticks in the rifling you have a problem. The RCBS was always pushing the nylon friction shaftt back into the holder and if you tightened it the bullet plug would stick in the bore and pull it out longer, I have several setting on the shelf and they will stay there. And the Stony Point you have to subtract the base plate dim. we had used both and were not satisfyed with them so we came up with this design it's simpler to use and will repeat better. My brother-in law was making them he was slower than molasses in winter and finally quit making them. Who knows since I've retired from smithing I might start making them. No record books or ATF regs. Al

Old Dog Man--Why don't you try a small run of the gauges, and announce their availability here on THR? I KNOW where you'd sell one, right off the bat!
