I'm not entirely fond of the 5.56/.223 round and the common AR platform, but because it is common is why I choose it. Here's a quick checklist:

AR15 parts, tools, accessories to be found across the nation in some of the following places:

National guard and coast guard bases.
Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine bases.
Police departments and sub-stations.
Police patrol vehicles.
Federal law enforcement facilities.
Federal law enforcement vehicles.
DOE, DOD, CIA, NSA, et al.
Airport security (port authority) departments.
Airport security (port authority) vehicles.
Civilian operated training facilities.
THR and AR15 members.
Your local gunny shoppe.
Etc. so on and so forth.

Sooo.. in the event of alien invasion, zombies, evil robots, foreign invaders, economic collapse, JBTs, etc. it might behoove one to get hold of an AR15 simply because of the shear volume of them in this country.

"wasted thier money on an ar"

Heck, that's nothing, think of all the tax dollars I've evidently wasted on public education.

In a SHTF scenario the only really practical solution is an AK or 12ga shottie anyway. Long range accuracy does not mean squat. Kinda hard to claim self defense when you plunk somone at 200 yards.

the whole point of SHTF scenario is you won't know what you will have to do or need. you might think you can predict the future, but that's highly unlikely.

Plus, if it's a SHTF why would you need to worry about claiming self defense when the courts might not be functioning? And, you can still claim self defense at 1000+ yards. Range of your target is not an automatic disqualification for your reasonable apprehension anyhow.

In a SHTF scenario... exactly what judicial system are you worried about?

Practical accuracy always matters.

In a TEOTWAWKI situation. The real choice is a bolt action 22 rifle, and as much ammo as you can scrounge. And an ax.

You forgot the wheelbarrow and the barkless chihuahuas.
