Buttstock care

I have my first AR build going on, with an A2 buttstock I have installed on it.

The trouble is the stock has a light color with a real rough texture to it. Is there a finish or coating I can put on this to darken it up a bit, and protect it?

I was thinking gun oil (CLP) but wanted to ask before I did anything

Any of the Duracoat style finishes will do nicely. Since you're building the rifle anyway, do the whole thing. http://www.duracoat-firearm-finishes.com/
Oil won't do anything.

Duracoat is an outstanding idea. I have never even considered that before, but you can bet I will be giving it some thought now.
