I considered the Colt, S&W, and GSG in military look alike .22 rifles. After due consideration and comparison I decided on the GSG AK-47.

I could NOT shoot any of the three guns as I personally don't know anyone who owns one. I will be the first in my circle of friends to have one.

I would appreciate your comments and evaluations on any of the above or comparable .22 look-alike military styled weapons.

I am considering this type of gun because:

A. It will be cheap to shoot
B. I like the looks

Thanks for your input!

The Colt works fine, very accurate for a .22. S&W is probably good also.

I would not have chosen the GSG for a couple of reasons. I don't mean to hurt your feelings, but I think you're bound to experience a few headaches.

Thanks for the input. I have READ some really BAD reviews on the Colt. Do you have any specifics regarding your "couple of reasons" for the GSG?

Thanks again.

The M&P is the best of those 3 choices. The Colt is made by Umarex a BB gun company.(the same guys who made the pot metal Walther P22) Don't know much about the GSG other than it ain't made on our shores, while that doesn't mean it is of bad quality it does mean parts and accessories will be a PITA to obtain. The S&W is made by a great company who has always stood behind their product. But I do think the GSG and the S&W are the best two of those three, I think the S&W is the best one of those three. BTW I hate the way AKs look so maybe I am a little partial.

Why not the GSG? The parts will be hard to find because they're GERMAN sport guns. It's not a huge company, so finding the parts to fix things will be tougher.

Magazines will also be more difficult to obtain. I'm not sure if the M&P15-22 mags and Colt mags are interchangible but it wouldn't be difficult to imagine.

The Colt that I shot is my uncle's. It is 100% functional with CCI mini-mags or stingers. Has the feel of the real rifle, but without the recoil and muzzle blast. It's nice to be able to use it at indoor ranges where rifles are otherwise banned. Very accurate. I could write my name across the target paper with holes if I wanted to.

I bought a GSG AK47 22 about a month ago. I originally was going to buy the S&W or the SIG522, with the SIG522 being my first choice. I decided to wait on the S&W until I am sure that new production units have the OOB fixes incorporated in them. I would have bought a SIG, but the only one that the gunshop had would have needed to be sent back for a new barrel to fix the canted gas block issue. One of the clerk showed me the GSG AK, and for some unknown reason it felt right to me. Long story short, I bought it without knowing anything about the manufacturer or without having read any reports. I've looked mine over real good, and I have not found anything wrong with it. The reviews that I found later were uniformly positive, plus I have yet to find any negative report from someone who owns one of these. That doesn't mean that someone didn't have problems, I just could not find any.

I was concerned that service and parts would be a problem, but that's not the case. If you take a look on the AK47 forum, under armory and then GSG, you will find the gunsmiths contact, and the customer service contact. I hope I never need them, but they are available.

I assume that you have actually the gun you are going to buy? If not, there's a few things you might keep in mind before you buy. First, I wouldn't but the GSG over the SIG. I do think that the SIG is the best buy. Unless you are buying the plastic stock model of the GSG, you won't have a sling mount on the stock. For some reason the wood stock models do not have a sling mount or a butt plate installed. The sling problem is easily fixed by installing a sling stud, which I have done. The butt plate will be a bit more involved, but I am going to fit one at some point. The front sling attachment point looks to me like it might be too weak, so I installed a 3 surface rail mount and use a rail mounted sling mount.

Another problem for some is that the rifle is very heavy for a 22, it weighs 9 and 1/2 pounds in the wood stock version. That's pretty heavy.

Magazines are easily found, I bought my extra one from Midway. I wish they made a short 10 round mag, but they just modify a 25 rounder to get a reduced capacity mag. This is my biggest gripe, and it isn't unique to GSG, however over on the S&W forum some guys have cut their mags down with great success. I intend to try this with one of mine. I just don't like all that magazine hanging down, makes it tough to bench rest.

The last issue I know of is that the rear sight doesn't have any windage adjustment. For the life of me I do not know why they did this. However, with my rifle the windage is dead on, so it isn't really an issue with me, but you might want to keep this in mind if you intend to use just the iron sights.

To sum it all up...I am happy with mine, I would buy it again. However, when I find a SIG522 without the gas block issue I will buy one. But, for the $364 I paid for my GSG I think it was a good buy for me. If you do buy it, please let me know how yours shoots and what ammo works best. If you have any other questions let me know. For what it's worth, I think that you'll be happy with the purchase.

I have the GSG-5. Would I buy it again? I don't know. Don't get me wrong, it's been flawless, I think ATI, the importer stands behind their products, and there's plenty of advice on the forum ... 22tactical.com
I recommend CCI Mini Mag for ammo and stay away from Remington.
I've heard good things about the Federal value packs 525 also.

The downside? It's a .22, not very exciting to shoot. No recoil, almost no sound.

I love my GSG-5. The first time I took it to the range, I knew I was going to shoot the 10/22 way less often.

Im considering the same options. The only thing I dont like about the AK is the HV ammo only.

Im leaning toward the Colt for the authentic look and feel but will not buy any gun without confirming whether or not the BHO is part of the gun and not just the mag follower.

It needs enough wallop to cycle the action, without beating up the works.
No big deal. WalMart sells 100 round CCI Mini Mags for about $6.

I agree, Sig 522 at the low end, or Spikes Tactical dedicated upper at the high end. Both take the easy to find ~$20-25 Black Dog mags.

Chiappa makes a .22AR upper that is about half the price of the Spikes and it appears to also use the Black Dog mags, but my experience with my Chiappa 1911-22 won't let me recommend it.

I've both the Sig 522 and a Spikes Tactical dedicated upper and both have been 100% with the cheap Federal bulk pack ammo from Walmart other a few duds per box of 550, but the dud rate seems lower than when shooting in my Ruger pistols.

Needing to use CCI Mini Mags nearly doubles your shooting cost compared to the bulk pack.

I picked up my Sig 522 for $300 at a gun show a couple of weeks ago, so shop around!

Ive heard decent things about the GSG but I went with the S&W 15-22 and so far every shot has gone off without a hitch. Ive only used Federal and Aguila .22. Just use quality ammo, clean er, and oil it well and you wont have any problems

You don't NEED to use the CCI Mini Mags, it's just they work better. Yes, they do cost more.

How about a 10/22 and a Krinker-plinker kit? (or a used 10/22 w/ worthless bbl to keep prices exactly comparable...since you won't used the stock or bbl anyway)

Unless its gotta be the latest thing...
