Alleged machete-wielding man shot dead

VISTA – Deputies investigating a report of an attempted break-in and shooting at a North County home Friday found a man's bloodied body behind the wheel of a nearby parked car.
A woman made an emergency call about 6 a.m. to report that her son had just shot a machete-wielding man at their home in the 900 block of La Rueda Road in unincorporated Vista, sheriff's Lt. Terry Wisniewski said.
Minutes later, patrol personnel found the dead man seated in a car, at the end of a trail of blood leading from the house. The alleged shooter remained in the area, as did his mother, Wisniewski said.
She told investigators that the deceased had been trying to break in and was brandishing the large cutting tool when her son opened fire. Deputies found the machete on a nearby lawn.
Bloodstains led from a rear area of the home and past a fence that the fatally injured apparently scaled to get to his car, the lieutenant said.
Homicide detectives took the shooter to a sheriff's substation for questioning. No arrests had been made by late afternoon.
"There may be no charges filed in the case," Wisniewski said, adding that the killing might be deemed self-defense.
The dead man apparently knew the shooter and his mother, according to investigators. An ex-girlfriend of the deceased reportedly lives at the home with the family.
Authorities withheld the names of all the involved parties.
