Caliber for varmit hunting (coyote and fox)

Debating what rifle to go with for varmit hunting. Fox, Coyote, etc. Use FMJ no matter what caliber. What's your vote.. if it's something other than what's listed please say what caliber and why...

In lieu of that I vote .223.

Was going to say 22-250 but if you wanna save the pelt and meat I would say 223.

If handloading, 22 hornet. if not, a 17 hmr, within 100 yds, or a 5mm mag, out to 150, will drop them like sandbags.

I have been leaning towards 223 since I already have tons of ammo... Hate to start the stockpile over. Also considered 17HMR but it seems a little too light and weak..

It sounds like you have your anwser in a .223 since you already have alot of ammo. .223 is a good choice so I wouldn't worry

"...Use FMJ no matter what caliber..." Milsurp or commercial? Hunting with milsurp ammo is illegal in most places. They don't expand. Commercial fmj's, on the other hand, are made for hide hunting.
Eating coyote or fox is another thing that's not normally done. However, I have recipes for all kinds of meat. Coyote included. Your's for the asking. [email protected]

"...what rifle..." That isn't the same as the cartridge.

Grounds hogs I use the swift so 22-250 would be my call. But where You can shoot a hundred rounds a day I'd go with the 223 for ease of ammo.

With the modern ballistic tip or hollow point bullets designed specifically for varmint hunting all the calibers you list are able to have ONE HOLE in NO HOLE out capability on coyotes ,if driven to the correct velocity, and the shot is taken at the right distance, (no 25 and 50 yd shots).

Fox are 1/3 to 1/4 the size of a normal size coyote and would require a.223 or .204 light load, or a step down to 22 Hornet , .22 Mag, 17 HMR.

I only ever killed 'Yotes for bounty-- we used to get $15 a head (for the ears coonnected with a strip of scalp for proof)-- we did try to eat one, or part of one cooked on a spit at the river once..

nasty-- tasted like game, wild liver...

I always used a Winchester 94-- 30-30 all the way!
