Hi folks!

I'm a bit of a newbie here, but hope some other cali residents can steer me right. I know we have draconian laws against assault weapons in california. I'm not moving though, the ocean air is too nice.
The topic I'm searching answers to is transfer of an assault weapon. My uncle has an old AK. A very nice one. He is getting older, and since nobody in the family but him and myself are interested in firearms, he wants to give me his guns (very nice of him). He doesn't shoot anymore, and they have been sitting idle for years already. Just a long rifle, a shotgun, but also this old russian AK. Can he somehow transfer this to me, since it is legally owned? Must it be turned over? Licensing? I have not a clue. I have searched online for laws relating to this, but have no clear answers. Cannot buy, sell, or manufacture these weapons, but what about passing them on to relatives? I want to keep within the law, but hope I don't have to give this gun up!
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Chris
No way to transfer a assult weapon in california.
You can surrender it to Law enforcement. They will be sure to cut it up in to little piece if you do.

Best option is to take it out of state if he dies. Do you have a place to store it out of state? You can sell it to someone in another state where they are legal. Since the expiration of the 94/clinton crime bill there are many assault weapons for sale that are now legal so you might not get very much for it.

Oh well, just as I guessed. Hand it over for destruction.

By the way, uncle isn't dying, just not interested in shooting anymore. Hasn't touched his guns in years (though they are stored well).

In addition, it IS a semi, not full auto. Not all that old, probably early 80's. Never had a chance to shoot it, so don't know it too well.

Don't let it get destroyed, just sell it to a friend out of state. Then you can go and visit it.

CA only allows movie studios to have permits for machine guns.

Glad you enjoy your ocean view. I left CA in 1992 because I wanted to live free. I guess we all make our choices.
