The shotguns that I've owned have had either blued or Parkerized finishes, but many are available today with factory-applied camo finishes in various patterns. In practice, how durable are these camo jobs?
Dunno how the camo finishes wear, but if you wanted to try a temporary camo finish you could try the no-mar camo tape. Apply it and when you're done remove it ..... a couple of bucks worth of tape.
I personally haven't had good experiences with that camo tape at all. Granted I left it on for nearly a year, but it was a heckuva time getting it off (elbow grease and rubbing alcohol) when I finally wanted to.
Agreed - I tried some of that "removeable" tape this year for turkey season and although the tape came off, it left TONS of sticky residue. If I hadn't planned on refinishing the gun anyway I would have been more upset.......
The factory camo finishes are pretty durable from what I have seen. Factory camo jobs use a transfer process to apply the pattern- see http://www.camoit.com/ for some examples.
I've had an 11-87 SP Turkey in MO Break-Up for over five years now. I've used it for waterfowl as well as spring turkey. It has ridden in the duck boat in nasty cold weather and been dragged through the brush and trees in the spring.
The finish has a couple of scratches on it; but the pattern hasn't faded and is consistent between the synthetic and steel pieces. This finish doesn't wear off like the paint did that I tried on some archery equipment.
