Thinking about going up to a show in detroit area this weekend. I know I can buy long guns in MI and have done it before but can I buy handguns? Michigan requires a purchase permit to buy one, ohio requires nothing special other than the instant background check. So, should I bother driving up if i'm shopping for a handgun?

It depends. Doesn't it always?

If you do not have a Class 1 or other, then just bring copies of your fave CFFL so the Mitchygun dealer can send it to the Buckeye dealer. Your people call my people, then let's do lunch. Make sure you tell your dealer what's the score so they don't freak out when the Brown Truck of Happiness (what's with the new wedge trucks?) arrives with an unexplained pistola.

BTW, be prepared to pay shipping and transfer fee; for some reason a lot of guys expect something for nothing. Me! Now! Free!

You can do it like El Tejon said, but why would you want to? Most times, after the transfer and shipping and state tax, you've wiped out most or all of the gun show discount (which ain't always much if any).

I buy everything online. I find prices often cheaper than gun shows and stores, even with shipping and transfer (no tax!). FWIW.

I don't go to gun shows in MD or WV because I know I'd have to pay all those extras to get the gun to VA. Too bad, because there's a surprising lack of good gun shows in gun-friendly VA.
