Ok, I'm not sure where to post this but I'm pretty sure it is in here, so correct me if I'm wrong.

I am not yet 21 so I can't get a CC license, but I want to keep a firearm in my car as often as possible. But I need some advice from you guys and gals first.

From my selection of guns, these are the two that I am considering keeping in my car. A .22 Magnum single action revolver, and a 12ga. pump shotgun with a 24 in. barrel.

Now for the shotgun I can get a 18" barrel and a pistol grip no problem, but how would I keep it in the car but readily available? Propped up between the center console and passenger seat as long as it's not concealed? Laying accross the back seat?

And for the handgun, it's not the best option for defense but it's better than a Mag Lite. If need be I can spend a couple hundred bucks on a new gun but being under 21 can I possess it? I believe I can as long as I have parent consent and it is not concealed what so ever.

BTW I live in NC, from what I can tell from my research, if you are over 18 you can legally possess a handgun.

Any and all help is appreciated, thanks!

Sorry, I don't have advice about which one to use, but I think a major question you should figure out first is how to secure it in the vehicle (while being accessible and unconcealed, if that's the legal configuration for your age and state). I can think of a lot of reasons why it's a bad idea to simply lay a weapon on a seat loose. Those reasons include it becoming a deadly flying projectile in the case of an accident, or if you have to slam on the breaks to avoid hitting a zombie horde (or whatever) and the weapon is suddenly on the floorboard right when you need it the most.

Maybe a gun rack or police-style clamp in device for your shotgun between the passenger and driver seat? I don't know. Just food for thought.

If you have a hunting license, the shotgun, kept without a round in the chamber, is perfectly legal. While it is legal for you to posess a handgun that has been gifted to you by your parents before you turn 21, should you have to use it, or be found with it, it could be a messy situation.

Personally, I understand your concern, but not wanting to harm my chances of owning a firearm down the road in life, I made due with a hefty club stowed under the passenger seat of my SUV until I reached that magic age. A truckers "tire thumper" did, and still does, yoemans service for me, in more ways than self defence. Guns in vehicles, in my opinion, is just asking to be made a poster-boy for some anti DA. However, you are to be commended for showing the maturity in asking about it first.

Kansan, as far as the shotgun goes I have thought about the shotgun clamp/stand beetween the two seats. And for the pistol, I would rig a holster to attach to the outside of the center console.

Shadow Man, thanks for the suggestions. I do have a hunting license and I didn't know that if you had it you could legally keep an unchambered shotgun in the vehicle. Also thanks for commending me for showing maturity!

And the reason I want to have a gun in my car is this..I know a guy that is 17 and when he pulled into a parking space of the local Wal-Mart at 6 PM (still light outside) a man jumped in his vehicle holding his hand on his right hip saying he had a gun.
He was forced to drive the man to the other side of town, once there the man got out and told him not to go aywhere. He floored it and got to a safe area and called the police.
Basically he was kindnapped and robbed for $11.

With a hunting license, you are able to transport weapons legally, inside the area your license is for. I'm not sure as to the state of the weapon, but a weapon seperate from its ammunition is useless as a firearm, and is reduced to a very expensive and awkward club. It takes mere seconds on most firearms to put a round from the magazine into the action, and with practice, it becomes a natural act.

As for your reasoning...I can't think of a better one. Loose firearms in a car are a dangerous thing, in more ways than one. Racks, clamps, etc attaching the weapon to the interior roof, seatback, or between the seats are a smart and safe idea. Just be sure to practice with them so you are familiar with their operation, and the constraints the vehicle imposes upon your weapon. Check your local laws, and have at it.

Ok, well assuming it's legal for you and that you have a way to secure it... And given your reasoning (which does sound reasonable) I would go with the revolver. Assumedly, if your threat is outside of the vehicle, you could just floor it and escape. If the threat is in the vehicle or punching you through your window or trying to drag you out of a car (in a riot-like situation) while you're stuck in traffic, it may be very difficult to swing around a shotgun within the confines of your vehicle.

Shadow Man has some good advice. Don't rule out mace, a tazer, a tire iron, a passenger ejection seat....

Kansan, If I was in my car and the assailant outside my first action would be to floor it and get out of the area. Now like you said, If there is no escape route and deadly force is intended on me, I will return that force without hesitation. I am a strong supporter of self preservation.

Patriotme, I am indeed picking from some of the guns I have already. My list includes a 12ga pump shotgun, 20ga autoloading shotgun, .22lr rifle, 30-30 rifle and a .22 magun SA revolver. Out of the list the 12ga and the revolver seem like the best choices, I have the 12ga set up for home defense right now. But if it is infact legal for me to possess a handgun in my car I will likely buy a new DA revolver or an autoloader for this purpose.
