My friend has a Russian and Yugo SKS. The extractor on the Yugo is bad. He's wondering if the whole bolt assembly from the Russian will work in the Yugo?

Interchangeability

Crazed ss--The Yugo SKS is very like the original Russian SKS according to my reading. Bolt SHOULD fit.

And Jackal is correct: If the bolt fits into the mechanism, it should work fine. (Please note that this is the Internet--the above advice is worth just what you paid for it.)

However (there is always that darn "however!") (1) Were I to switch bolts between ANY 2 guns, I'd have the headspace checked by somebody with a "go" and a "no-go" gauge before firing same. And, (2) The Russian in good condition, and complete, especially if all the numbers match, is worth probably twice what the Yugo is worth. If the Yugo needs a new bolt, those are available as parts. I'd buy the Yugo a new bolt (the caveat about headspace still applies!) and keep the Russian complete.

Parts for SKS's are available from a number of sources. I'd start with Numrich Arms, www.e-gunparts.com were I you.

Do yourself, and your friend a favor, and get the headspace checked by a gunsmith if you do swap the bolt.
