I thought it was a model 25,,,but I guess not,,,I'll look in my book and try to find it!

Possibly a model 23, others may know much more than I, but its the only thing in my book that looks like it!

Looks to me like an N-frame .38/44 Outdoorsman of 1950 (a pre-Model 23). The 5-screw places it between 1950 & 1956. You sure about the serial #?

This wheel gun was almost surely made just before model numbers were assigned to the S&W revolvers.

A .38/44 Outdoorsman sound 'bout right!

NICE GUN!!!

Alas, the gun is not in my hands. It is about 300 miles away. Does the serial number not fit with what it appears to be? There is no model number behind the crane.

The serial # you supplied (S322xx) seems low. If it's a pre-23, or even the pre-pre-23, the serial #s would range approx. S75000 - S261999 or S62940 - S75000, respectively. Maybe the "3" is really an "8" or "9"?

There is no model number behind the crane.

That would make sense. See S&Wfan's comment.

Thank you all. Once again THR comes through in record time.

BTW, apparently the sn stamp is light, so it's possible the first digit is an 8 not a 3.
