I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to ship my 30/30 to a buyer's FFL in Oregon. I know I can ship a rifle using the United States Post Office, but I was wondering if I needed to find a cardboard box big enough to hold my hard plastic gun case (55"X12"X5"). What I would like to do is put a padlock on the case, then affix an address/postage label right to the case and ship it that way.

Anyone have experience with shipping rifles USPS?

Thanks!

I suppose you could but why telegraph what's probably in the box. Boxes and cardboard are cheap enough to at least camo it a little. I shipped my rifle out west last year via fedex in an alum. case w/lock but it was all wrapped in an box. No problems no scratches

I have mailed a couple of pistols on my FLD/s papers. The post office required they be in boxes with all seams and corners taped so they could stamp all access points to discourage their own employees from stealing them.

I don't know if the same rule applies to long guns but I doubt they will take a naked gun case.

Ask them, not us.

Yes, they'll take a securely sealed & addressed hardcase for a long arm, I've seen it done. (Pistols are another matter...)

That's only required for Registered Mail. You can ship them in a regular box, as long as you meet other USPS requirements.

I shipped my Remington back VIA UPS. called Remington first and they sent me a box made to fit my rifle.

Check w/ your local gun shop, Sometimes they have boxes. My local GS, usually has a stack sitting outside, You can sometimes find a box that is similar in size. When I shipped prior i would write - Fragile, Glass on the box. Except for handguns which they ship overnite.
