Was thinking about registering an AR15 lower, then building up a lightweight SBR. If I register it as a 10.5' barrel say an LMT brand and then want to go shorter say to a 7' PWS upper can I do that legally? Or am I stuck with one upper/barrel length?

Temporary changes can be done to a sbr. You can swap barrel lengths, even calibers.

However, you *should* be able to configure it back to the configuration defined on your form 1 or form 4 by retaining the part(s) necessary.

If you decide to permanently change your SBR configuration, you must send a letter to the BATFE informing them of that permanent change. No additional fees required.

Great! Thank you so much for the info! Will see about getting a lower to register. Thinking about splurging and getting a LaRue billet one.

I was told the same thing today in a well known shop in Fort Pierce Fl.The bottom half is the kicker

Swap all you want once its a SBR you can run what ever length you want.

Is there a form to send to the BATFE to notify them you want a different length than listed on the form? Or do you just sent the examiner a letter?

Got my delayed stamp yesterday, it was very annoying that it went "problem" in November and they never notified me, I'd still not know if I hadn't called when it got to 7 months in January. But once I called, they were very responsive, returned my calls, and were otherwise helpful getting it resolved. Got the Trust redrawn (it had already been approved by two other examiners before I'd mailed this one in, having had it done by a lawyer doesn't really guarantee anything) Feb 9, priority mailed the paperwork back to the examiner on Feb 10, and got my stamp yesterday Fed 18.

I'd listed 5.56x45, 7.62x39. 9mm, 5.7x28m & .22LR on the form (Multicaliber marked lower) and all the barrel lenght I'd seen commonly advertised almost a year ago when I sent it in 7.5" 10.25" 11.5" 14.5" but the first 5.56 & 9mm uppers I've got my eye on is 7".

No form involved although I usually recommend sending a copy of the original Form 1/4 along with a note. Send them a note if you are 'permanently' changing the configuration. So if you normally run a 10.5" upper and decide to get rid of it in favour of a 7" upper, drop the BAT-men a line. But if you are just swapping uppers to go to the local range and play around, you don't even need to do that.

I just sent a letter to the ATF-NFA folks advising them that I was planning on running multiple length uppers and calibers on my multiple SBR lowers and I received back a letter thanking me to help keep the registry current and up to date. Laminated copies of these letters and the Form 1 with stamp ride in my range bag with the originals safely tucked away.

What address do you send it to? Same one on the form 1?
Yes, I sent my letter to the NFA Branch address.

It was probably more that what is necessary, but with NFA stuff, paperwork seeking and receiving official NFA permissions is not a bad thing to have in your files.
