Can You Tell Me About This Knife?

Hello,

I have a knife here, and I was wondering if someone could tell me what it is. Google kicked nothing up.

It was a gift. It was made in Japan and seems to be well-made. It is very nicely balanced to the hand and holds an edge.

The brand is Champion (I think, see the pic) and I really like it.

Unless it's a collectible of some sort, I think it may become my new skinning knife for small game, after I make a sheath for it.

There is one on sale here for $20 including shipping, so it doesn't appear to be collectible. Have fun cutting up the little critters.
 
I've got one that appears to be identical to yours except its marked Boone. I don't remember how or where I got it or how long I've had it but its a work horse. It rides in the door pocket if my work truck and in a pinch it'll replace every tool in the box except a wrench.

Looks like typical sporting goods fare from 30+ years ago. It says "420" steel, so it isn't exactly a super-quality steel, but it is likely softer rather than brittle which means it will serve as a useable tool for camping, fishing, whatever.
 
IIRC, back in the 80's you could get that same knife under the "Maxam" name. I had one as a teenager, was a decent knife.

I have a very similar knife in one of my boxes, sold under a Canadian logo.

I had the impression that it was actually made in Canada, only now I'm starting to have doubts.

I'll have to dig it up.

The knife is quite light for its size. It has a good edge, decent balance, and a leather sheath.

The distinctive choil was what caught my eye -- hey, I have a knife with that same choil -- and then the rest of the blade . . . yeah. I think I have a closely related knife.

 
Years ago the Cutlery industry decided to develop a stainless type steel to be used for kinves.
Metalurgists within the industry came up with 420 Stainless.
I think it's great for kitchen knives and the abuse that such knives are subject to.
