Can you use an O/U?

While you could get a deer or turkey with a O/U [I got a turkey] you would usually use sights like a rifle and if using slugs you might want a rifled barrel for max accuracy. You could easily use turkey chokes and rifled chokes in a O/U.

I once had a remington O/U w/ skeet barrels that I used for deer hunting

It shot slugs like a rifle

Can't really say why, but I'm skittish about puttin' slugs through my doubles.

I use my pump with the dedicated barrel for slugs.

Doubles are for missing dove.

Smoke

Depends on the chokes. More open chokes will shoot slugs just fine. Modified will do. Forget buckshot. It's not reliable enough on deer.
Turkeys? No sweat. They have been hunted for a very long time before 'turkey guns' were ever heard invented. Use the right ammo. No 2's or bigger. No buck shot though. If you have just one shotgun and you shoot it regularly, you're likely better with it than a guy with a bunch of them. Sight in the same as you would a rifle. Know exactly where and how good the pattern is and go.

Yep!

Recall before Repeaters and smokless powders the single shots then the double bbl guns felled fur , fowl and protected the homestead. Buck and Ball is still successful in these duties as well. BP or Smokless - makes no nevermind.

All we did was add smokeless powders and improve on shotgun loadings- Improved on the design and features.

Have used double guns ( O/U and SxS ) for quite a variety. Still have a soft spot for the single shot...jonesing for a single shot at the moment if the truth be known. :)

If shooting slugs at any distance to speak of, don't be surprised if both barrels don't shoot to same point of aim. If they do, consider yaself quite lucky.

For turkey, check out Remington Hevi-Shot in 4s or 6s. With even modified choke and head/neck shots, likely good for one-shot drops out to around 35 yards.

So far, I haven't been able to use my O/U for turkey (or any other gun for turkey), since luck has avoided me = no license draw. I've used the O/U for goose and pheasant and very pleased with it. Never tried it with slugs for deer, but why not use it-you have choke options and if the gun shoots well for you..more power to ya!
