Cancano 7.35 Rifle

Wow Christmas came early here in TN, my father-in-law gave me his old guns (not a lot of them but hey they are gifts), so I have some interesting new guns. The first is an old single shot Iver Johnson .410 shot gun, in very good condition, the second is an old Remington Model 10 pump in excellent condition, and the third (and point of this post) is a sporterized Carcano 7.35 rifle. It is in excellent condition and I am very curious about how these old rifles shoot, and to that point where can I find ammo for it these days. I looked at several of the reg. websites and have come up empty, so any help would be appreciated. Further more any info about your own experiences with these rifles would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance.

the problem with the 7.35 carcano is as far as I know it's the ONLY rifle to use a .300 diameter bullet.

So even bullets to reload with are going to be as rare as hens teeth.

.298", technically, though you can use the few .300" bullets available. And you're correct in that bullet selection flat-out sucks. Buffalo arms has 123, 130 and 150 grain Spitzers for the rifle.

If you plan to shoot the rifle much, you'll want to reload. Old surplus ammo is rare and expensive, and new stuff is outrageous ($2/shot). The 7.35x51 is ballistically almost identical to the .30-30, except that the spitzer bullets have better BC's. It'll work well on medium game out to ~250 yards. If you do decide to stat loading, don't try to hotrod the cartridge, as the Carcano action isn't particularly robust. The upside is that the M38 is a short, lightweight rifle with a quick action, so it'd make a good woods/brush gun for deer and pigs.

Check Graf and Sons, I think they have ammo for them also and their prices are very good.

Pretty good rifles all things considered. Nice piece of history also.

I just checked Grafs. They don't even have brass for 7.35 Carcano, much less loaded ammo.
