Now what i did was contacted the local distributors by email. I explained i need powder and need to know who they sell to that i can get it from. With in a day i had emails back to me on who they sold powder too. One of them was a local gunshop that had told me the previous week they were out of powder. When i learned that the distributor supplied that gun shop i wrote them back and asked if they could send them powder. The distributor contacted the gun shop arranged a shipment. A few days later i went to the gunshop asked if they had goex yet. The owner smiled and said he got a great deal on a powder purchased. So we both made out. I now seem to have no problem getting powder from this gun shop.
They have it for 14 a pound. You just have to order 25lbs at a time but you can mix and match. I also believe hazmat is included in the price the only thing extra is shipping.
.cheese,
Too small of grain powder in a large bore will burn too quickly and could burst the breech. Larger grain burns more slowly and pushes out the ball. BTW, bore size is 1 1/8". Fires ball, mini-ball and shot round(20 -.45 cal balls at once)Copied after a civil war "horse cannon" Taken apart and carried on a horse to a battle, set up and fired. Then taken back apart and moved to the next fight. MG BTW, thanks for the leads on the powder. MG
scrat, yes I have access to video... but I'm afraid my computer savvy is somewhat lacking... I'll see if my teenage daughter will help me upload it. That is a pic of this last 4th of July at the house. Firing off "blank" loads to celebrate. We fire it off 5 or 6 times then finish off with fireworks. MG
3fg: pistols and small bore rifles of up to .50 caliber.
4fg: used as a primer in flintlock rifles.
BP cannon grade has gotten expenive. I still have a 25lb case I bought 8 years ago at $6.00 a pound. I remember seeing a site on the net recently which sold it around $10 a lb. I'll post it if I can find it again.
If you shoot with a group, buy a case of 25 1 lb cans of powder. You can mix the granulations. You only have to pay one $20 Hazmat fee. As noted before, look up a Goex distributor with the best price.
Here's my swivel gun / carriage gun that can be configured to suit to the event. I do rendezvous and "battles" for Texas Independence.
It has a 1 5/8" bore and fires a 1 1/2" round fishing weight. A mold came with the tube. It is lathe turned steel, so no separate breech concerns. It came from a hobbyist in Canada. Sorry, I lost his name in a hard drive crash. I use either fg or ffg. A 200 grain load is good. When I fire blanks I stuff the barrel with moss. It makes ecologically good mulch. I have painted the carriage red.
One shot is of a ball being dug out of a tree with a tomahawk, the only tool that was handy.
Hey Seafarer12, if you like to shoot BP matches we're only 50 miles away. We just had our 49th monthly shoot.
We also have a buckskinner's group that is planning Rendezvous IX in mid-November.
