I just read a news article on the CAPPS II airport security measures that are to be employed across the country. They are calling the "Computer Assisted Passenger Prescreening System" a violation of civil rights and privacy. The system sounds like a pre-boarding "background check" of all airline passengers and it is suppose to tag suspected criminals and those with arrest warrants. Now I'm not saying the idea is good or bad, but it does give the average Joe an idea what it is like to be investigated and made to feel like some sort of subversive scumbag when all you want to do is ride on an airplane. This is the same sort of treatment legal gun owners have been dealing with for years. Why is everyone whinning about it? Don't they know it's for the children???

Is this the one that has the backdoor credit check and bank account history built into it? Supposedly, if your credit was bad and your checking account was unaverage, it raised your score somewhat as being a possible terrorist. I heard this awhile ago, but it sounded so absurd that I wasn't sure of the validity.

that's just a copout. If this stands, it'll eventually migrate to train and bus as well...

Why, how DARE they assume that I am a criminal and I have to PROVE that I am not! Oh, wait, I have to do that every time I buy a product that goes bang.

I wonder if they're going to eventually throw CCW records into the mix. After all, if you're known to carry a readily concealable firearm on a regular basis...

Remote possibility that this could be good.
If it triggers a massive backlash.

Bring the heat up slowly on the frog vs max from scratch. Maby the frogs will jump.

I've never been accused of being a liberal, but this is one area where any liberal who opposes this system is right on the money.

It's possible that this system will be used to dragnet for criminals , much like the often-used example of the DUII checkpoint. The legality of using CAPS II as a system to catch or flag criminals unrelated to terrorism would be challenged under statutes governing probable cause. If a person is arrested for an outstanding warrant on traffic fines when trying to fly, his attorney would have a field-day since the crime he was arrested for did not pertain to the subject of the search. When a search warrant is issued, it must clearly state what the search is looking for. Broad search warrants are not allowed, and if they are issued too broadly, they are overturned in court and the finding are often ruled inadmissable. Acting on the finds of such a search for reasons of a traffic fine or even serious crimes not relating to terrorism would not be legal, because the scope of the search is too broad. Thus, to arrest a person on the basis of these findings would be essentially a warrantless search that has not been subjected to judicial scrutiny or prudence. Simply buying a plane ticket does not automatically give consent for a search beyond the scope of reason (ie. bags and personal items), any more than possession of a driver's license waives any rights we have for a search during a routine traffic stop.

I have heard it said that a conservative is a liberal who has been robbed, but a libertarian is a conservative who has been arrested.

isnt it ironic that many gun owners and many so called liberals are concerned with civil liberties? but gun owners and liberals in general are enemies(enemies might not be the best word.....no offense to all the liberals, but clinton did enact the AWB w/ a democratic congress and all the major anti polititians are Democrats)
i find that most people on this board however, support all civil liberties, not just the ones that dont fit in to our dream of socialist utopia

Yeah, I think it will a lot of fun to somehow fall into a bunch of categories which are likely to get some extra scrutiny:

1. White male - CHECK
2. Christian - CHECK
3. Easily frustrated when given the run around by high school dropouts and illegal aliens manning checkpoints - CHECK

So now everyones hackles are up and it is everyone thinks you are a terrorist when you tell the counter help that you want to declare the legal firearms you are travelling with ...

Best be limber and have the ability to clasp your hands on the back of your neck in less than a millisecond unless you want to become a practice target.

The sad part is that it is mainly window dresssing to keep the sheeple flying and the airlines in business. I mean what kind of moron couldn't actually carry out some sort of attack if properly motivated by 70+ doe eyed virgins- except of course pretty boy Richard Reid.

You know that the clam diggers in Boston Harbor have to go through special terrorist ID training so that they can report anything suspicious happening while they dig their horrribly poluuted clams at the end of the runwways at Logan international Airfield? Now I've spent some time digging those tasty bivolves myself, and I can tell you that Osama bin Laden himself could walk right by and no one would notice while their heads are down looking for that succulent reward in the sand and brine.

F*** that S***, I want to go back to America.
