I have a minor problem that is bugging me.

When I carry a 1911 I carry at 3 O'clock. I do my dry work from this position and am slowly building musle memory.

If I have to carry my PM9 it just doesn't work as well at 3. The little grip is not as easy to get a good hold on and believe it or not its not as comfortable as my 1911. I can wear it at 430 or so and get a lot better grip by leaning foward slightly.

What do you guys think. Continue fight with the PM9 at 3 so its in the same spot or just wear it at 430?

It's been my experience that different guns and different holsters have natural points at which they come to rest, as well as different ideal spots depending on whether one's standing, walking, sitting in a car, sitting in a chair, or mowing the lawn.

Most of my carry guns tend to gravitate toward 3:30 or 4:00 most of the time, but some trousers force them backward a bit.

The inconsistencies don't bother me much; indeed, I sometimes just drop guns in pockets. If I lived in a high risk location, I'd probably strive for greater consistency, and probably wouldn't rely on pocket carry very often.

Most people will say, at least I think they will  , you should duplicate carry locations and draw styles as often as possible.

I carry IWB and OWB and my gun never leaves that spot....draw for both are the same as far as location.
No matter what gun I have on me, short of pocket carry, its in the same spot.

When involved in a "higher than I can convey" stress situation...you dont want to have to remember.....'????, which gun am I carrying and where?"........Just draw your gun, for that you must KNOW WHERE IT IS!

BUT

I'd say its up to you....because everyone is different and youre asking a very personal question. If it works for you.....then cool.

Personally, Id carry the 1911 @ 4.30 with cant on it, just like you carry the Kahr now......but thats just me.

Shoot well...........

Do what feels best to you.I vary depending on the holster/gun combo as where I wear it.Sometimes 3,3:30,4,4:30 o'clock. My hand always adjusts without thinking,as to where the gun is.YMMV.tom.

I know, and have been told over and over, always carry the same gear in the same way in the same location in the same holster, etc. In a perfect world, this would be fine, not a problem. But, in the real world, it doesn't work out that way. Due to weather, clothing, or as has been discussed here, incompatibility of gear to position, there's just no practical way to accomplish this goal. Can't wear a shoulder holster on a hot day with no coat, and I can't effectively wear a belt rig in very cold weather under a suit and long overcoat with the best tie to keep it closed in the wind.

I'd say practice with whatever works for you.

I think you have the semblance of an answer to your own question. So very much of effectively drawing and presenting a sidearm is built on muscle memory. Hence, the oft said, practice, practice, practice. The purpose of all that practice is to make the drawing of a weapon pretty much instinctive.

So I ask you, "what will happen to your draw and presentation technique if you change guns and positions"? If you do continue to wear the PM9 I suggest that you carry it at the same position as the 1911 - one less thing to have to adjust. My real suggestion is to continue with the 1911 and stay with that. :)

I have no plans on not carrying the 1911. However sometimes clothing dictates a smaller gun. I'm gonna keep on trying the Kahr at 3 and pick up another holster for it to see if that helps.

Thanks guys

brach, just remember each brand of pants/jeans/slacks has different placement of belt loops which will in some cases dictate where you can wear a given holster. If your draw begins at 12 o'clock and includes as mine does,a wipe to remove the outter garment, your hand WILL find the gun.tom.

Tom,

I use a double handed pull up then push my right hand back down. I wear Levi's almost exclusivley so most of the loops are in the same spot.

Thanks for the input guys.

All my belt guns are carried strongside at the 3:15-3:30 position, and my pocket guns are always weakside in the front pocket. When my pocket gun is my primary its kind of wierd since Im depending on my weak hand, but Im proficient enough with it, and I have a lot of muscle memory going for that pocket.

I tried switching over to strong side carry when Im pocket carrying but my poor right hand doesnt know where its supposed to go, so I stopped doing that.
