I have a Kimber Compact Stainless that I really want to love, and I do except for the problem of the occasional empty case mouth catching on the barrel hood during it's ejection. Stops the gun. I can't rely on this gun for this reason. Sent the gun to Kimber and they supposedly "adjusted the extractor" and returned it to me asap. Extractor seems well adjusted and I would guess this may not be an extractor issue. But I'm irritated that I got the gun all the way back to Kimber and they didn't get this fixed. Usually happens on the next to last round during rapid fire and has happened with a few different Wilson magazines designed for use with the Officers /Compact frames. Ammo is factory fresh Win, PMC, AmerEagle JHP and FMJ.
I believe the rim of the case is still in the claw of the extractor when the mouth of the case gets caught on the hood of the barrel... when I pull back the slide to clear the gun, the empty case doesn't fall out, I have to work at removing it from the extractor. Does that information indicate anything?
The factory standard recoil spring is 22#. I measured the weight of the spring in the gun (which was rated as a new 22# spring 400 rounds ago) and it's just around 20# by my measure, which I think is accurate + or - 1 pound. I have a used (900 rounds) spare spring which measures just a tad below 20# and another (brand new - rated 22#) one which measures about 21#.
Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this problem? I suppose the easy approach would be to try a lighter or heavier recoil spring? Or is the ejector not doing it's job? Confusing to me.
.. is the consensus that I should try the heavier recoil spring?
Thanks guys... seems like this should be simple, but it's driving me nuts. Gun has about 1500 rounds through it so far and I still can't rely on it. Aside from this problem, the gun runs well and is quite accurate.
