To all safe meisters,

While on Christmas vacation, I came across a small jewelry shop with a very interesting safe in it. My fiancee concentrated on the goodies in the shop while I concentrated on the safe. (I should'a been concentrating on her...)

Anyway, the combo dial was made up of an outer ring with just 4 numbers (1 - 4) on it and an inner knob with no numbers at all. The inner knob clicks distinctly at each of its stops.

The way I understand it works (from talking with the proprietor) is you must:
1) Pick a number (1 - 4) on the outer ring, in the correct order
2) Rotate the inner knob the correct number of clicks, in the correct direction.
3) Repeat # 1 & # 2 until you have gone through all four numbers.

This looked really neat! It should theoretically be possible to open up this kind of combo in the dark...

The owner also said it had multiple layers of different kinds of bulletproof "glass" in it, some in sheets and some in small triangles (to cause a drill bit to lock up), all of this sandwiched between high quality "safe" steel plates.

He said it was very heavy for as small as it is ~ 9000# and that it was made by the French.

Any idea what kind of safe this was or where I could find more information on it??

I am not in the market for a safe like it - but I'd sure like a couple of small (pistol+ or documents+) household safes with that kind of combo system - IF they are as secure as he made them out to be.

Thanks,

Jax
