I have been in the process of reloading those Win AA hulls, which call for Winchester W209 primers. Since I've found out that the STS hulls would be a better way to go, I checked the Hodgon data center to work up a different load. It called for CCI primers, which I have not been able to find in this town. I called Hodgdon to find out what was going on. The tech there said that the CCI shotshell primers have been discontinued and that I can substitute Winchester W209 primers, PROVIDED I stay in the low range of the load data for the STS hulls. I will end up switching to a different powder only for the hull, according to the rest of the load data.

At any rate, contact your powder manufacturer/reload authors to find out how the primer substitution can affect things and adjust accordingly.

Yep, different primers have different temperature, time of burn in milliseconds, and volume of flame. This impacts not only velocity but also pressure. This is much more useful than brisance which is used as a gage of shattering affect of an explosive charge.

Here's a good article on the dangers of substituting primers.

The best thing to do is follow the recipes. There are some primers that can be substituted (Fiocchi 616 and Nobelsport primers can be subsituted for Winchester 209's), but I don't recommend it.

CCI shotshell primers have been discontinued

That was news to CCI when I e-mailed them.
Dear Mr. Scout

This is the first I have heard of any rumor like this. I have no
knowledge of the manufacture of 209 or 209M's being stopped.

CCI 209 and 209M primers are now, and have been for sometime,
manufactured @ Federal Cartridge in MN. Federal is our sister company,
we are both owned by ATK. Linda

You can not use 209's in recipes calling for 57's or 157's (different size primer pockets), but you can use 209's (but not 209M's) for recipes calling for 109's.

The Hodgdon recipes call for CCI 209M's, not just plain 209's.

Well, get on the horn with CCI, because none of their shotshell primers are getting sold here in Houston. In that case, somebody in the distribution line's gone to sleep on the job. You can't get them at Carter's, Gander Mountain, American Shooting Center, not even 10ring.com! 10ring has the various CCI metallic case primers, but no CCI shotshell primers whatsoever.

There's a shortage of primers of all kids across the board. Some people blame the war in Iraq, others say it's because people are hoarding, or a combination of both and other factors. It's not unusual to go into just about any store that sells reloading supplies and finding empty shelves of certain primers (and other supplies) for days, weeks, months.

If you find them, buy a bunch, because if you don't someone else will, and it'll be days/weeks/months before they have more.

Yep, it's a vicious cycle.

Recob's has them for $30.99 per 1000, http://www.recobstargetshop.com/browse.cfm/2,39.html
If you do go the mail order route, keep in mind that you'll have to pay a $20 HazMat fee with your order. So buy a bunch and some powder to make it worthwhile.

Recob's and Connie's http://conniescomponents.com/ generally have the lowest prices for components, but you have to order in bulk to get over that $20 HazMat fee and shipping charges.

What I'm saying is, some of these vendors are no longer carrying these primers, they're not getting them in anymore, period.

The case with Winchester 209 primers is they're everywhere (if you remember Madonna's Vogue "Everywhere you've heard it, it's everywhere you go.")
