CCW revo vs. semiauto...

This is NOT a "which is better?" thread.
Both are wonderful. Both have their place.

Maybe it's just the latest manifestation of my own mental instability...?

I dunno.

But when I am carrying concealed, I feel VASTLY more secure with having a loaded semiauto with me, as opposed to when I carry a revo.

This is NOT because of weapon reliability, caliber issues, or anything related to stopping a goblin in a social situation.

When I am carrying a wheelgun, I feel...very exposed and in danger of an ND.

It SEEMS counter to logic.
WHY is this?
Is it 'cause I can SEE the ammo in the wheelgun chambers?
All 3 of my S/A options for CCW are DAO, as are my snubbies.

This is bugging me, because it seems counter to the reality of safe carry with either/both.

Ideas?

My feelings are the opposite of yours but my circumstances may be different. I am currently living in an urban downtown apartment. Although I have never had a ND (knock on wood), I think the probability of having one while loading/unloading/holstering is much lower with a revolver. As a matter of fact, I rarely unload my revolver. It is either on me or locked in a quick access safe. With an auto (series 70 gm to be specific), I feel the need to at least press check before holstering. That second or two when the safety is off makes me a little nervous given that there is essentially NO safe direction in which to point the muzzle.

That said, I would not hesitate to CCW the auto if I didn't have the revolver.

I have heard people say they feel safer with a semi, even if the semi does not have a manual safety ( i.e. 1911, BHP vs. say a Glock). One person equated this to the fact the revolver cyl is thicker, therefore doesn't feel quite as "concealed" though in reality the OWB they use is high and tight and is concealed very well.

Another is concerned that if the revolver should be grabbed in a scuffle, and whether in retention(he himself) or the BG gets into the trigger guard it will discharge.

I've not personally gone through this, I have questioned the effectiveness of belt and holster and how I dress around concealment. I tend to feel better with IWB than OWB. Of course I sometimes carry A semi primary, and revo BUG. For awhile been carrying the semi.

It's good to question and test ourselves, keeps us from getting complacent.

I do have a bucket of sand to aim at when I reload after dryfiring my semi's. Once loaded I don't presscheck. Like Sean Connery said in the "Untouchables"...'you checked it once, now leave it alone'.
 
Personally, I feel safer with an SA or DA/SA in SA mode. I guess my whole life I've had it ingrained into me to keep the safety on unless actually firing.

I have guns without safetys and enjoy them, but I always feel like I have to be extra, extra careful with them.

Now, DAO with a revo or semi? I can't percieve any safety difference at all between them.

On balance for me ........ the semi has it ... for capacity. but never have regarded revo as other than totally reliable and not concerned either re ND ...... that is potentially more of a prob with an unfamiliar semi IMO.

Final choice is down I think to what you shoot well and, what conceals well ... for you.

Practice is essential ...... whatever the piece..... both for shooting accuracy ... and safety and competance all round.
 
I have both semi autos and revolvers, but for carry it is always a revolver. This is one of those things that each person decides for themselves.
 
Over the years, I have carried both revolver's and semi-
auto's as CCW choices. My reasons for choosing the auto
over the revolver (excluding the firepower factor) are that
the semi-auto doesn't "print" as bad as a revolvers cylinder;
and it is a bit more comfortable too me.

I tend to shoot semiautos better, so that's what I carry. It really all comes down to personal choice, either will serve you well.
 
I carried various semis for years because that's what everyone told me to do. But I shot wheelguns better, no big surprise, I shot them more often. Now I've got a 357 on my hip and I feel very comfortable. It's kinda the boxers/briefs arguement, both will do the job.

Quite frankly, I wouldn't question it too closely.

Just go with what your gut tells you is right for you, and you'll probably be a lot better off.

My gut tells me that, with the exception of a C&L semi-auto, I'm comfortably with EITHER a revolver or semi auto.

But, for a variety of reasons, I choose to carry a revolver for about 99.9% of my CCW time.
 
As much as I like revolvers, I cannot hit the broad side of a BG with one in DA. Believe me I have put thousands of 38/357 rounds downrange trying. By contrast I am much more accurate with my LW Commander, and I can shoot very accuratly, very fast. Years of various competitons and tons of practice paid off. Nothing against revolvers, but when the chips are down and I need something I can count on, I want my Commander.

Whatever rows your boat.:D I carried a revolver over 20 years. Two of my favorite carry semis are the Kahr MK9 and the Browning BDM with 15 round mags. I also carry a S&W m65 and a Colt D/S. You feel comfortable with your semis? Excellent choice. :)
