I see that Century Arms is selling an Enfield 45ACP Carbine. I called them are they are going to be selling for $300. For me add about $20 for shipping and $30 for the FFL transfer. Total would be about $350.

I would LIKE to build one myself, but I can't seem to find an Enfield with a bad barrel that I can get using my C&R for cheap enough. Getting a reciever is no good because I have to go through an FFL and the transfer would cost too much AND I would have to buy a new stock for it as wel. I could alway's use a Turkish mauser, but those don't feed HP ammo. So in short I have a few questions.

1. Is this a good deal?
2. If given $350 would you buy one.
3. Anywhere I can get an Enfield with a relativly good stock and action (don't care about the barrel) for somewhere around $80 or below?

Thanks everyone.

/This gun is REALLY tempting me. :(

I remember AIM had Enfields for about 75 each recently. you could sell
the original barrel on ebay for more than it is worth. I see conversion
"kits" to make 45acp Enfields. These seem to run about 125 to 150.
I saw the ad for the conversion in Shotgun News.

For my money I'd pick up a poor, abused Ishy- I've run across them occasionally in pawn shops and the like- and make it into one of Rhieland's conversions. For the difference (and the satisfaction of doing it yourself) you could buy some ammo.

BTW, Rhineland is a member here.

Yes I know about Rhineland Arms. I'm just trying to find a cheap Enfield that I can grab and convert. Thanks chestnut ridge I just went back and checked AIM and I see that they have $89 Enfields. (They also have my C&R on file. :) ) Mabee I will give them a call and see if they have one with a really bad barrel that they want to get rid of for even cheaper than that. Do Highroad members or C&R holders get a discount at Rhineland Arms? :D I'm OK with a Dremmel, that part does not scare me. (Just tonight I had to modify one of my shell holders to fit on my priming tool. That hard steel is a real b*tch to work with.)

Over the years, I've bought two Century Arms-build MilSurp conversions (both sight unseen). Both would up being total losses; I wound up having to strip the rifles of whatever parts were not completely butchered and scrap the rest. In one case, CAI's drunken monkey's literally cross-threaded the barrel into the receiver and destroyed both in the process.

I will not buy anything that has CAI stamped on the barrel if there is even a remote possibilty that they built it.

Well, I called AIM and asked if they had an Enfield that was in good shape, but had a bad barrel that they wanted to get rid of for cheap. The guy said he wasn't sure and to call back on Monday and talk to "Chris" and he would probably have something. So it looks like they DO have a beater every now and then that they want to get rid of. :) I'm hoping that they do. I would hate to tear off a good barrel to do the conversion, but I will if I have to.
