I just purchased a Century Arms copy of a Winchester 1887 12 gauge lever action shotgun.
Bought it because I think it is a cool looking weapon. I know enough to realize that isn't the best reason in the world to choose a firearm but I'm content with my reasoning.
Anyone here own or owned one?
I have the required 12 gauge pumps... Winchester Defender, Remington pump and a 1\4 inch over minimum legal length single shot H&R kept close to my bed.
Any real-life comments on the lever action?
Don't need the "I told you so" results please.
Some knowledgeable shotgunners have recommended a clean and polish on the actions by a professional smith... Opinions?
Thanks
Chuck

Can't say too much about it. But I bet you could find a video on Youtube all about it. I am bidding on a Century Import JU-2000 coach gun made in China. And yes I also have two other shotguns. I wanted something just to have some fun with. No harm in that. And I too will be back.

They have a following in CAS. Not as common as '97s or double guns, but not uncommon. Those that use them are always fast. I have definitely seen a slick'em up shop in Cowboy Chronicle, so somebody's working on them. And that is the full extent of my paltry knowledge on this subject, admittedly barely worth the electrons it took to post...

I bought one. It's a lot of fun, but you've got to work the lever like you're trying to break it. The originals were made for shorter shells. I use Remington Gun Clubs in mine as they're usually a little shorter than other brands.

For what it's worth, here's my take on it. Note that I don't have a Century reproduction, but an Italian-made Chiappa 1887.

My review of the Chiappa, written some time ago, now:

There are a few videos here:

I use mine for PSG, not CAS.

In the last few months, I've had problem with hard extractions. However, I'm *also* having trouble with my 1981 Ithaca M37 DSPS with *failures* to extract, so this could be an ammo-related problem.

In short, I love my 1887. :)

Regards,

Mark.
