I'm debating which cerakote to use on a grip frame. I'm just doing the grip frame for an old model Ruger Blackhawk and want to replicate the brass finish to liven up the boring gun a little. I've acquired a 2nd aluminum frame for the purpose so I can preserve the original.

Question is, Cerakote has two golds, the H two-part 122, and the C single-stage7800. To my eye, the C-7800 looks like a better match to replicate brass. On the other hand, the H-122 is supposed to be harder, more scratch resistant, but it's also described as "shimmering" and "metallic" which is less a match for brass.

From someone with experience with both types of Cerakote, would the "C" be sufficient for a grip frame, or should I risk the slightly more bling look of the "H" for the added wear?

Original vintage Super Blackhawk brass frame fit to a (non-Super) Blackhawk.

Carekote requires a fracture grain granule, sand blast to stick to he surface. Ruger aluminum grip frames are cast, well known for minute pin holes just below the surface. The normal prep for a messed up Ruger grip frame is a chemical strip, thus not real conducive to a good wearing surface coating.

A brass frame…. every one, including the Ruger originals, not mounted on a gun, required fitting,,,try here they still list brass grip frames for sale $350, you play, you pay:

I'm able to prep the metal correctly and apply the materials, and I know the difference in application. I'm wondering how hard the c (cold) cures as it's the better color match and I've not used it or can find any real-world comments on that. Thanks.

Duracoat is different, being air or oven cure, but i let it air cure. Its pretty darn tough after a couple weeks to fully cure.

I have no experience with Cerakote.

Pretty hard although I cannot give you an exact number to define it. I don't think it's as hard as the heat cure, but the stuff I've had done for me seems pretty darned durable. What I hear from those who have done the application is that the usual problems are lack of cleanliness before application and trying to use it before it's fully cured (5 days according to the literature).
