Not to diminish Theron’s intelligence – she’s apparently right up there with Sharon Stone in terms of IQ – but using her fluency in English as evidence of her smarts is a bit misleading. :) She grew up speaking English as much as Afrikaans, as is the case with nearly all South Africans, even the dimmest bulbs. It’s not as if she had to learn it as an adult (although she's pretty good with American idioms and accent).

I've also read that she has working knowledge of more than 20 languages, but even that's not surprising for a South African -- the nation does have 11 official languages. We Americans sometimes have a skewed view of the intelligence it takes to be multilingual -- language capacity has more to do with learning at a very young age as opposed to intellegence.

I agree with Sean Smith's point about the difference between passive antipathy and overt anti-gun activism.

"We Americans sometimes have a skewed view of the intelligence it takes to be multilingual ..."

So true. That reminds me of a good quip by Mark Twain (paraphrasing): "I was very impressed with the intelligence of the Europeans. Why, in Paris for example, it wasn't unusual to find 4 and 5 year olds running around talking in fluent French! Very impressive indeed!"

She deserves an Oscar for the change in appearance she pulled off. If they had not told me I would have never guessed it was her.

The great problem with forming your opinions from
Reread my post.
Conclusion not opinion.

I've wasted as much of my life as I care to on the merits or lack of,, of someone that will in all probability be a burn-out/washed up within 10 years.

Pity really the girl has so much going for her - looks-talent-education -...

Happens all the time though.

I posted about Theron's intelligence on another forum (www.lostworldtv.net Click on Message Board at the main display to get to the forums. The Theron posts are on the "Talk About the Lost World" forum.)

Apart from two liberal females who appear to enjoy making negative comments on my posts, we got some good feedback, including a post from the executive writers of, "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World", who moderate that board. (Yes, it is a remarkable board in several ways.)

They pointed out that intelligence comes in various forms, and that people who excel in one area may not be adept in another. I personally think they're confusing aptitude with raw intelligence. But: how much "pure" intelligence is required to have high aptitudes? Has anyone run across any sound studies on this?

By the way, I think Charlize is very bright indeed, and quite talented. I think her star is only just beginning to reach its brilliance, and it will be some time before it reaches nova stage. I will be surprised if she doesn't become one of the best known actresses of our day. Hal is entitled to differ.
Only time will prove which of us is right.
