Yeah, their quality has been up and down over the years. My 1980-ish vintage 44 Bulldog, bought used, isn't pretty, but solid, tight, and has been reliable for 24 years, so I'm about ready to start trusting it
I've seen specimens through the years, though, I wouldn't want. I'd have a very good look before buying another one.
