Chick holsters?

Any ladies here? Or guys - how do your ladies carry? I'm mainly curious if anyone thigh carries. Whenever I mention I'm looking for a thigh holster I get the eye roll and the 'that's Hollywood stuff' response. But, being a lady who wants to carry - I'm not thrilled with most of my options. I don't want to carry in my purse. I know there are bags made for that purpose, but I have no interest there for several reasons. The obvious being the purse is the most likely thing to be taken from me, not to mention I have 5 kids and would prefer the thing be on my person or locked up. Women's pockets are generally too small and I don't tend to wear baggy clothing. I've looked and am considering a bellyband from Galco and will probably get one to use when the clothing works but I live in FL so the heat is a concern and I usually wear dresses so a bellyband would be hard to get to in that case. I found "chick holsters" ( www.chickholsters.com )and am curious if anyone has used that brand? Galco also has a thigh holster but the chick holster somehow looks more comfortable (I'd take the silly flower off though) So my main question I guess is does/has anyone used a thigh carry for concealed? And what have most ladies found to work well, besides the purse?
 
Have you chosen a carry gun yet? Lots of women seem to have success concealing a slim auto IWB at the appendix position--about 1:00-2:00 if your belly button is noon. It doesn't seem to require more than a slightly loose shirt and a proper belt (although I'm not sure what the availability is for women's gun belts).
 
Thanks for the responses. I'm down to 3 choices for what I plan to carry regularly, all about the same size -little auto's. I'm heading down to the store tomorrow to hold (and hopefully shoot) all 3. I have 6 weeks before my permit will come so I time to figure out my carry options. Also thanks for the fist link, hadn't heard of those. I LOVE the corneredcat!! :) Actually she's pretty well sold me on a bellyband after I'd dismissed one in the store. She's also one of my sources for saying forget the thigh carry, lol. I may just have to get used to wearing looser untucked shirts. Sigh :(
 
Alicia, there is a member here by the name of "Ally." She recently went through the same choices and may be able to offer some perspective or advice.


On another note, the Scottish have it great. All they need is a drop leg holster under their kilt. I'm suddenly jealous.
 
If you typically wear dresses as you mentioned, a holster any higher than your thigh is going to have you throwing your dress higher in the air than you probably want. While that may serve as an excellent distraction to give you time to draw and fire ... I'm not sure that's what you want. :)

Many people tell new concealed carriers to dress around the gun. You may be facing just such a change in your life. If you're willing to switch from dresses to skirts, you could easily carry in-waistband (IWB). There are any number of "tuck-able" IWB holsters on the market from manufacturers such as CrossBreed, Comp-Tac, Kholster, Theis, etc.

If you're set on continuing to wear dresses, perhaps you could wear a belt and carry out of waistband (OWB) with a jacket or sweater to conceal.

It's an intriguing question. I'd never really given much consideration to concealed carry while wearing a dress.
 
Thanks for the responses. I think I'll just have to have a variety available. A bellyband would work with skirts, especially those without a belt, I could wear it around my waist. I'll also get an in waistband holster for when that would work. I think I'll order a thigh holster and give it a try - I just wish they weren't so expensive for something I may not like. But with shorter dresses I think it would surely work and if I have to pull up a longer dress imo it's better to show a little skin on my own terms than not be packing. I'll have to practice drawing and see how easily (or not) it could be done. Winter will be easy but most of the year in FL it's cool clothes. The bra holster is interesting lol but I can't imagine that's comfortable at all.
 
If I may make a suggestion ... I would recommend AGAINST multiple methods of carry. If the time comes when you have to pull your weapon, you want that action to be pure muscle memory. Putting it in a different place, potentially every day, will not allow you to do draw based on pure muscle memory.
 
Alicia, my wife uses a couple of different methods. She runs a S&W 642 revolver everywhere she goes. She purse carries when she can't hide it on her person. I think it's a Galco. Expensive? Heck yeah, but quality. It has a rear exit pocket that can be very easily drawn by her. Otherwise, when she is wearing a non tucked shirt, a thin Uncle Mikes?? Nylon works well. No belt holster looks right on her frame, it's obvious that she is packing.... Good luck, let us know what you found.
