After years as a reloader I finally bought myself a chronograph.
A Beta chrony with a printer and the remote readout.
What was planned as a morning "training run" got rained out and ended up happening this afternoon under cloudy but cool skys.
What an education.
Started with the 22/45 and some ammo I trusted and then moved over to a Beretta Bobcat. I was surprised to see it was sending Thunderbolts down range at 980 fps. Always wondered what a pop gun like that gave up in velocity.
Then I tried some commercial cowboy 45 Colt loads (Win) against my reloads. Mine were more consist and averaged about 745 fps which is what I expected.
Then moved over to the 1911 and compared some S&B (923 fps avg) againsnt my reloads and found out I was running a bit hotter (1033 fps) than I expected out of my 5 inch barrelled auto but again my std dev was better than the factory ammo. I expected about 975 but since they were made on a progressive I will build in a better safety factor next go-round.
Last but not least I fired some S&B ball out of my 380 and it averaged 921 fps as opposed to 10 shots of Speer Gold dots and found they were running 1016 fps average.
I've only had one afternoon with the thing and already have answered several questions that I have wondered about for a long time. I can't wait to see what the 22 Hornet is really doing, the 45-70, the Sweds, my pet bismuth duck load, my pet dove load......all the others etc etc......

I should have done this 20 years ago. Or 30.
My advice in the future will be, after somebody gets all the nuts and bolts of a good reloading set up they should consider purchasing a chronograph early rather than later in the RL career.
