Chinese AK-47 mak 90 Norinco Good or bad?

I saw one of these in my local gunshop for 299 looks like its new, the metal work and finish are very nice, much nicer than my SAR-1.
It has the thumbhole stock on it, which also seems nice.
Does anyone here own one? what are the advantages / disadvantages to these models?

Can you put a pistol grip and standard stock on one?, I think there are synthetic stocks availible. The one I saw had something on the muzzle, but it was not a flash hider or slant brake, it also had spiral turning grove on the outside of the barrel is this some sort of decoration?

The Chinese MAK's are good guns. You can legally put a pistol grip and standard stock on it, provided the rifle has a certain number of US made parts. ATF has decided that the AK has these parts:
(1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings or
stampings
(2) Barrels
(3) Mounting blocks (trunions)
(4) Muzzle attachments
(5) Bolts
(6) Bolt carriers
(7) Gas pistons
(8) Triggers
(9) Hammers
(10) Disconnectors
(11) Buttstocks
(12) Pistol grips
(13) Forearm handguards
(14) Magazine body
(15) Followers
(16) Floorplates

In order to legally put the standard stock on, five of those parts have to be made in the US if it has a stamped receiver.

Those guns are generally considered to be of better/more consistent quality than SAR-1's, as far as I know. Not that I'd hesitate to own a SAR-1. But if I saw a norinco mak in like new condition for $299, I'd be all over it. Around here, they want $375 for beat to hell SAR-1s.

If the butt end of the reciever is squared it will take almost any regular AK stock, if its rounded you have to buy an adaptor. There easy to find at most the AK parts houses. The Norinco is better finished, I have 2 SAR 1 s that are great but about the only thing I dont like is the parkerizing, I'll probably try refinishing one of them one of these days. Grab the Norinco before its gone...thats a damn good price.

Thanks all, I looked at it again and it was not that much nicer than my SAR-1, I wont go into details but I decided to pass.

Instead I ended up with a saiga in .308 which seems to be a very nice rifle, and it was the same price with 200 rounds of south african surplus .308 to boot!!

Now I need to find a spare mag for the saiga.!!!!!

I have a Mak90 and so does daddy his has a scope, witch parts do you all suggest changing to american so the furniture can be changed to a pistol grip. I'm interest the cheapest parts and opinions on the easiest parts.

IMHO you should change the hammer, trigger, and disconnector. If indeed AK's are similar in disassembly to Galils, it should be very easy to do.
Also change the forearms handguard and gas piston, and you're home free.

Here's what I replaced on my MAK90:

• 1) hammer
  2) trigger
  3) sear
  4) full stock set (count as 3 pieces)

All the parts were from Kvar. The stock set was designed for European AKs, so each piece, except the p-grip, required some modification since the Chinese AKs are a bit different. The fire control parts dropped right in. You should then have 9 imported parts:

• 1) receiver
  2) trunion
  3) barrel
  4) bolt
  5) bolt carrier
  6) gas piston
  7) mag body
  8) mag follower
  9) mag floorplate

If I've missed any, post it.

$299 for a MAK-90 is good price.

I paid $250 for mine after the AW Ban, but before the Import Ban executive order signed by Klinton.

On GunsAmerica.com the lowest price is usually abour $350 for those.
