Civil War shell causes lockdown at AHEC [PA]

The Army Heritage and Education Center in Middlesex Township was under a lock down for about an hour Monday after a local resident inadvertently brought what may have been a live Civil War era shell to the campus.

Nobody was injured in the incident and the shell was transported off premises to an undisclosed location in Maryland by a Pennsylvania State Police explosive ordnance disposal team, said Jack Giblin, director of visitor and education services at AHEC.

He added, during the transportation of the shell, state police closed down Army Heritage Drive as a precaution. The lock down started at about 3:15 p.m. and continued until about 4:20 p.m. During that time, no one was allowed to enter or leave Ridgway Hall.

Museum Director Jack Leighow said a local man saw what appeared to be a rock in the Conodoguinet Creek near Wolf's Bridge Road in Middlesex Township. The man fished the object out of the creek, took it home and cleaned it off only to discover it was a 12-pound Civil War era shell.

Giblin said the man transported the shell to AHEC for the purpose of donating it to the museum's collection in his son's name. A security guard saw the shell as the man approached Ridgway Hall and immediately alerted staff, Giblin said......[more]
