Currently I have an inexpensive cleaning kit from the local gun shop. It was $12 and has rods, brushes, solvent, oil and patches for my .22.

I have some odds and ends that I use for my 9mm and 40. I am soon going to expand to a .22 rifle and a 12ga shotgun. Should I be looking at a better kit, or just continue adding to it?

Also, I was considering buying a few bore snakes (.22, 9mm and 40s&w) do these really help or are they not worth the $14 per snake?

Any other items I should be adding to the kit?

I was thinking of upgrading the solvent and oil to the Hoppes Elite or similar as well.

Depends a lot on what you have to clean, how careful you are, want to be with it. For my old beater hunting 22, my shotguns, and my handguns I use the cheap universal kit. For my precision bolt action rifles I would not dare touch them with anything other than a Dewey one piece cleaning rod and a chamber guide. For my semi auto non beater needs I use bore snakes, in my opinion they are worth more than 14 dollars. As far as upgrading your solvent, I would agree you need to acquire some Hoppes No 9 and/or some Butches Bore Shine. As far as the oil, stay with a cheap gun oil with no synthetic additives for the bore as it has been said synthetics can cause bore fouling problems themselves. I would get some quality cotton patches (cut an old t shirt up to appropriate size) and a cleaning kit is never complete without a trusty old toothbrush. :D
