Kind of a newbie question... now that I have a new H&K, I need some cleaning advice. Cleaning the Ruger 22/45 was quite easy-- field strip it, wipe it all down with solvent, lightly oil it, and reassemble it.

But the H&K is a lot more complicated with quite a few more parts. How much solvent and oil is too much? I cleaned it with solvent then wiped it down, then lightly oiled the slide, barrel, and recoil spring assembly. Put a very little bit of solvent on the hammer to get rid of factory packing grease/gunk, and a little bit of oil there as well, then a little oil on the frame rails for the slide. How do I know if I'm over/under oiling? This is all pretty new to me :)

sounds like you covered all your bases, if your over doing things you will get some oil spit back up onto the bottom of the slide during firing.

I like to keep the trigger bar linkage clean and lubed also.

You don't have to do much but wipe things down and lube the rails/hammer.

I recommend M-Pro 7. I've recently discovered this cleaner and I'd have to say it's the best so far. I've used Cutters, later CLP Breakfree but the smells nearly killed me. M-Pro 7 is the most user friendly gun cleaner I've found -- orderless, safe, and environmentally friendly too. It also does a great job on my Berettas....:)

When cleaning: get the barrel inside and out; I'd use some q-tips and old rags which work best. Get along the area where the barrel is fitted. I oil along the rails before putting the slide back. It'll probably just take you a couple of cleanings before you're an old pro -- don't fuss over it.

Just make sure you oil any surface that had MPro-7 since it strips it away and leaves the metal unprotected.

I believe I'm not alone in this, but the combination of MPro-7 and FP-10 for cleaning (both), protecting and lubricating (FP-10) is a good one.

I'll keep some Wilson grease for my semi-auto slides as well, when needed.

All my other solvents are gone.
