There have been several tests done, and all hot water does is accelerate the rusting of the metal parts. Depending on the steel, sometimes you can actually see the rust form after a few minutes of wiping the water off the barrel, etc.

As for WD-40 AAAAAAAH!
That stuff is at best an external rust preventative, and will gum up an action in a short period of time. Nasy, shellacing stuff (imhe - in my humble experience)

Dave - more information please.

I fully strip my 1858 after EVERY shoot and clean it in HOT soapy water. I then put the parts into a bucket of near boiling water and then dry them one by one. I then lay them in a shallow box with kitchen paper on the bottom and liberally spray them with WD40 and gun oil. I then re-assemble and store.

To use the mix you suggest it seems to me that it could be difficult getting it into those tight little corners and also difficult to remove before shooting.
So - more infor please and I will give it a try. I am all for saving money if I can!!

Olive oil in a spray can

Olive oil sounds good, but gun oil has the advantage of being in a pressurized can which makes it easy to apply.
Would there be some kind of refillable pressurized can to be had, other than the massive spray cans that work on a compressor, to put olive oil in so one can easily spray the gun parts?
Probably olive oil would first have to be dilluted to make it sprayable, but dillute it with what?

Cleaning with hot water and re-lubricating parts

Hot water....(does not have to be scalding) works great. I put the parts in a metal screen basket and can rinse, soak, scrub with a toothbrush until things are clean. Pipe cleaners work great on the nipples. To prevent flash rust from forming it is imperative that the metal be completely dry before assembly. The hot water allows the metal to retain enough heat to dry these parts but I also blow dry the parts with my compressor and follow up with a hot air blow dryer. I use a mixture of beeswax, canola oil and bore butter on the metal (inside and out) and have had no fouling or gum up problems. As far as a delivery device for conveniently spraying olive oil, check out a good kitchen store. I found a metal cylinder that you pour olive oil into and can be pumped up to build up compressed air pressure and then sprayed. This would work well for the application you were discussing.

Hildo, do a search for "jenni can" or "jeni can" or maybe "jenny can". I'm not sure of the spelling, but it's a refillable pressurized can that works very well. I have a couple in the shop.

PLINK,

I got curious after reading your post and tried to look up "Jenny Can" using the three different spellings you listed, but was unable to find it.

What is the advantage of completely disassembling the gun to the last screw after shooting?

I havent done that to my guns... and honestly should I be doing that? :uhoh:

BTW, once bore butter dries on the firearm it's still protected - you do not have to keep applying it in order to keep it wet in any fashion. The idea being you're sealing the metal from air getting to it.
Heh, that sounds nice. I should do that with all my guns.

I take the grips off my Remy's and gently lay the guns into hot soapy water after every shoot, then dis-assemble them completely dry and dump all the parts except the frame and bbl. into Olive Oil I wiped the bbl and frame dry then swab the bejebbers out of the bbl and frame with olive oil wil the other parts soak. Then I wipe down the parts, use a Q-tip and olive oil the inner passages and machined areas. then re assemble the pistol, wiping it down with olive oil. Then dry it with cotton rags. I leave some olive oil in the bore (not wiped out completely) and in the chambers. I use bore butter or equivalent on the cylinder pin, and rear pawl area of the cylinder. Before I go shoot I wipe the bore and chambers clean and dry. I use pipe cleaners to clean the nipples.
