some FYI goodness.

Just shot off 500 rounds of federal 55 grain FMJ .223 at the range, gun was friggen smoking and the grips were too hot to touch. All I did the night before was drench the bolt in CLP and gave a bit of CLP on the inner upper. Point being, all 500 rounds with 4, 10 round RRA magazines went off without one hitch.
With everything as hot as it was the rifle ran perfectly with aerosol CLP and it was still all over the bolt. The carbon was not caked on at all, more like a muddy mess all over the bolt and inner reciever.
Stuff works great, quite happy with it, even though it stinks like crap it works good.

I've been using Breakfree for a lot of years. Just bought a can of the spray stuff a while back and it sure does smell different, in fact as has been noted, it stinks but then my wife claims it all stinks:D

I've found that plain old LSA weapon oil works about as good as anything. It's a heavier oil than CLP and seems to stay where it belongs on the bolt and bolt carrier better than CLP in my experience. The only downside with LSA is that it isn't meant to be used as a cleaner. That means you still have to use a good bore solvent first. This really doesn't bother me since I've never felt the "C" meaning "cleaner" in CLP was all that effective anyway.

I do still use a shot of CLP on an old silicone cloth for wiping down my guns before they go in the safe, which is a use I believe CLP is well suited for.

I do that too and also wipe my blued carry guns after use in hot weather. No rust yet!!

CLP is great. As for ARs, I've been the caretaker of a few of them. Each one was a little different. Some like lots of lube, other like not so much. No wonder we give our rifles female names eh?

My suggestion for CLP is as follows. When storing your weapon it should have a nice healthy coat of CLP. Before you go to the range wipe off the excess CLP and apply a light coat. Have any of you ever gotten the CLP blowback in your eye when you have alot of lube in your rifle? I have. OUCH! Damn that stings.

As for the smell... I kinda like it I suppose, but if I wore that to a dance club I'd be one lonely feller. Not all that citrusy to me. Then again, even if I wore some $600 dollar body spray I'd have the same results. Maybe next time I go out I'll save my money from expensive toiletries and wear my CLP.

Yeah

I've used the aerosol on gas shotguns for years. I really never thought of it as aerosol as it doesn't really come out in a mist. I think it might be a bit thinner than regular breakfree, but have not noticed a citrus smell.

Are you sure you didn't buy this? It has a citrus scent added

"CLP is nontoxic in and of itself, and the fumes are pretty much harmless (unless you start huffing it in a paper bag or something)."
WOW! is it good for getting high on too? (This is a jest. I do not endorse or recommend huffing solvents or anything else.)
I apply it lightly and wipe down til I can just feel the coating on the metal. Don't own an AR-15, so can't say how it works in that specific context.

CLP has it's own smell to me. It's not offensive to me.

The company that makes CLP is the first and I think only product so far that met all the criteria the military specified when they went looking to replace the several different chemicals they had in inventory at that time. I'm not sure if any other company has certified their product to that same specification. Check if your cleaner/lube meets MIL-L-63460

I've been using BreakFree CLP for several years now, and I think it's a great product. Mine's in a 4oz squeeze bottle, so I can't speak about the aerosol stuff, but the odor never bothered me. Then again, I actually like the smell of Hoppe's #9. Maybe I've inhaled too much of it over the past 50 years.

And it definitely smells like citrus. Just wiped down a gun. Bought this can about... 3 or 4 years ago. It's lasted forever.

I got curious about the "citrus" scent claims, and needed to clean one of my guns I shot recently, so I looked in a box where I had put some gun stuff a long long time ago, and there was a can of spray CLP and a bottle of it too. These are easily 25 years old. When I sprayed a little, it smelled just like the can I bought in December, same thing went for the bottled CLP.

And in no way does it smell even remotely like Citrus. Any citrus I have ever smelled anyway.:D
