Wondering if anyone from the upper Midwest is looking at taking Defensive Edge's Cold Weather handgun class on the 17th of Jan.

I am registered and really looking foward to getting some real training done with the cold and clothing issues that winter brings. How many of you in the snowbelt practice in the cold and with gloves on? How about drawing your pistol from under a winter coat?

Here is a real breif description of the course:

This will be a half day shoot based on dealing with cold weather. These issues are presentations from heavy winter clothing, numb and stiff fingers, as well as doing manipulations and trigger work while wearing gloves.

I have taken both Handgun 1 and Defensive Carbine with Sully and Defensive Edge and have to say he does a great job!

Couldn't find much about the course on their web site. Does it have a prereq. of HG1?

Sounds interesting.

Feel free to email myself or Sully with any questions on the courses.

I cannot speak for Sully or Defensive Edge, but I would venture a guess that HG1 would not be a prereq, just basic competency with a handgun.

Also the class will only be $45 and start time will be 1pm so we should get in some low light shooting as well!

Geez, I thought I was the only one. I did most of those exercises yesterday, after I got some firewood in. I think everyone who has a CCW and lives in a climate that can be cold should verify their gloved finger fits in the triggerguard of their handgun. You would be surprised.

I'd love to go, but my wife made plans. Have a good time and report back.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention Variable. I'll have to email about the handgun prerequisite if any.
The rifle and shotgun classes sound interesting also.

There is no prerequisite for this course, although I do expect you to be a safe and competent pistol handler. This is not a permit to carry course so it will not be based on legal aspects or basic pistolcraft fundamentals. This course is topic specific and is open to all that are open minded and willing to learn.

This course is based on dealing with cold weather issues of carry, presentation from heavy clothing, shooting with heavy clothing on, manipulations with numb and stiff fingers, and performing with gloves on. This course has been set up for those people who take their own and loved ones self defense serious enough to carry a pistol in our fine cooler climate, that they will be able to get some quality range time which deals with these real world issues. This course is designed as a half day and made very as affordable as we can make it at $45 per attendee.

Our webmaster will have specifics posted on our site soon, as I am not computer literate enough to do it myself.

Thanks for the info Sully. Unfortunately it looks like I'll be busy on the 17th.

Will it be offered at any other time? Also, are the rifle and shotgun courses similar?

Thanks :)

If there is enough interest we will do the course again this winter. We have scheduled Cold Weather Shotgun and Carbine Courses in February and March. We have to take advantage of the cold weather while the weather cooperates, I'd hate to try to do these courses in August.

Sully, looking forward to taking your armorer and operator courses in April at Valhalla. (9,000 ft. elevation in the mountains of Colorado will still be plenty cold enough for me :what: )

Please check your PMs.

Folks, I took Defensive Edge's handgun I last summer. Short but intense and useful. These guys teach well.

At least in winter you wont have to worry about the misquitos.

Denny,

Rob has promised nice weather as I am told that he has connections in that department (right!!!). Last July I was at a range nearby for the World Steel Challenge and it was 117 in the shade, so April sounds good to me. Arizona has got to be hotter, so you might want to pack your thermals.

tommytrauma,
PM response sent.

Well I did the CCW class last week. I helped at range until my turn. (most stayed inside where warm and ran out, shot, ran back in. They shot without gloves with gun in hand.
I used holster under jacket and normal winter gloves (chosen because they are thin but warm) Of course I couldn't do draw/fire as from low ready. :( Felt it was important to do it with gloves on as you won't get chance to take them off in real life.
