No way! There is no reason to because you can't get the hammer into the half-cock and still load the chamber. If the chamber is unloaded there is no reason to worry if the hammer is cocked or not.
I understand that. That's why I asked the question. I misread his post, thinking he said he carried it that way, and wondering how he could do it and what's more - why.

I know.... :)

My answer wasn't aimed at you, but others reading the thread that might have gotten lost about the reason too. ;)

My local shop has had one on the case now for a while at $325. If it's still there today, I'm going to pick it up. I've been mulling this one over for a while, and you guys have tipped me over the edge. With any luck, I might get it for $300 OTD.

Jason.....interesting post. good to 'see' someone who can do a one-off nicely.

1903, 1914 Mauser and Walther #4 all carried at least sometimes. the 1903 more often in the Sig coat cause it fits so well. the Mauser is picky about its ammo [likes shorter LOA than todays standard-so i load for it special].

the commonality of personal experiences involving actually pointing my gun at some one is that they see the barrel hole size as BIG. as in 'oh s%$#, he's got a 45" when it was a omc 380 in my hand. i did not correct him.
that was 30 years ago.....crazy is to rush someone with a gun but thats what has been occurring and needs to be planned for; so carry accordingly.

i have carried this one for years. ten years ago i made the grips.they are from bill of a marlin.they change the looks of the gun i think

1903 Magazine

New to THR,

I inherited a 1903 G3 in .380. I would like to carry it but it is missing the mag. All of the parts dealers list the 1903 as 32 and the 1908 as .380. They are essentially the same gun so I bought a 1908 .380 mag and it doesn't work in my 1903 (short by 1/16th"). Any ideas on where to pick up a 1903 .380 mag.

D's, the 1903 model M is a .32 cal, the 1908 model M is .380.

For the 1903's there were several variants, type I, Type II, Type III's, type IV. etc. A search at coltautos.com will give time lines I believe. You can also go to this link:

I heard that you could take a barrel from a .380 and put it in a .32 slide and use a .380 magazine IF the tolerance on the frame allowed it. This would mean that you could also take a slide AND barrel from a .380 and put them on a .32 frame and get a combo-gun.

This might be the case if your frame is numbered as a 1903 but the slide says .380 on the side. It could be a combo-type gun. See if there are any numbers in the slide in the void where the hammer would travel. Some slides had the last few digits of the slides serial number and later, 1920-ish, the entire serial number.

These guns are great and there is quite a bit of info on them if you search around. I just got into these in the last month or two and I'm still learning about the history and varients.

Good luck and please let us know what you find.
