Colt Mustang: available in 9mm? If not, what's next best thing?

Hi all,

I really am starting to like the looks and apparent concealability of the little Colt Mustang. The .380 chambering doesn't really thrill me, though.

Is it available in 9mm, and if not, what's the most similar gun I might find?

Mustangs in 380 only. Colt made a pocket 9 for a time a little bigger than Mustang and DA only I belive. My self I see nothing wrong with the mustang in 380 Iam carrying mine IWB as I type this loaded with CorBon HP's .

I assume that you are looking for a small SA 9mm, since the Mustang is SA. The smallest that I am aware of are some of the old Stars. Like a BM. The STI LS9 might be what you are looking for, though larger than the Mustang. If size is the concern then the Rohrbaugh RS9 is the smallest 9mm out there, it is also the highest quality gun made in the U.S. and surpasses most European manufacturers as well. Of course quality comes at a price, but exactly what is your life worth?

Colt Mustang: available in 9mm?

Like most other good Colt handguns it's no longer available in ANY caliber.

If you don't want a 1911 pattern in either .45 ACP or .38 Super or a Single Action Army you can forget Colt.


All of their other handguns are history. Even the Anacondas are casualties.
The Python Elite is only available through the custom shop.

Of course in their place you can now get the SAA in .32-20, .38 Special, .38-40, .44-40 in addition to the .357 Magnum & .45 Colt chamberings.

Jeff has already mentioned the fine Rohrbaugh. Another alternative is the Kahr PM9 or better yet the PM40. Best. Watch-Six

If you want a small 9mm., I suggest the Kahr PM9.

Colt made a DAO model with a repeat striker capability (something that is lacking on the Kahr models) called the Pocket Nine and it was about the same size as the Colt Mustang ...

... The gun is also about the same size as a Walther PPK but chambered for the full-power 9mm Parabellum and it is +P rated ...

And, why not? Using 1911 logic, it's done its job for a gazillion years, the SAA is a pr oven combat design and has "met the elephant" or however they say it, has been used from the Indian wars to the moros in the Philippians, and proved itself against the rest, and was designed by one of the greatest, most innovative designers in history, Sam Colt! And, it's expensive and you all KNOW you get what you pay for. I think I'll order one today!

Just curious. Why carry a gun with a 45 caliber size cylinder with 32 caliber holes in it, when in exactly the same size package (and slightly less weight) you could carry a 45 Colt? If for no other than the intimidation value - just imagine what it's like to be staring down the barrel of a fully loaded 45 cal revolver, where the bullet noses are just short of the front of the cylinder. Fresh pants time, I expect. I doubt you'd get the same reaction from a 32.

I don't mind the 380 and wish the Mustang was available in a 9mm. Then again, they are not the best deal to be found. A few months ago, I ran across a Mustang Pony for $335 in blued (rough shape) with two mags and a hoster. I probably should have bought it. At the local gun show this past weekend, I saw a clean Plus II for $475 (blued), a blued Pony in really nice shape for $550, and a NIB stainless one for $750. I'd still like to have a Mustang, but the prices are a little out of my league, for the most part. For $550-$750, I'll buy another Colt 1911 45 ACP (local dealer has a brand new XSE Commander sized for $650 - stainless) or throw in a few more dollars and get that stainless Python I've been wanting.
