I just received a Colt Police Positive Special 32-20 WCF from a family member and I am trying to learn more about it. I have found conflicting manufacturing dates. The serial number is 1834xx. Does anyone know what year it was made? Should I have it checked out before using it? Any other info would be appreciated.

Thanks

On Edit: It has plastic grips with the Colt logo. Could these be the original grips?

Proofhouse.com says 1919.
I think hard rubber grips with Colt logo were standard at the time.

If it is in good condition it will be safe with standard .32-20 ammunition. We are warned against shooting the high velocity, high speed, high power rifle ammo in revolvers, but that hasn't been made in many years. Any recent production .32-20 is the standard speed. Anything labeled "cowboy" will be milder still.

My Dad carried one for many years to protect himself and his changebox while driving a city bus. It was well worn and when he retired and sold it, he had no thought of it as an heirloom I would like to have, darn it.
