colt python cylinder problem

I have a Python and it has had numerous 38 spl rounds shot through it. Now, a 357 Mag will no longer fit in the cyl. How do I clean out the cyl to remove the build up.

The easiest and best way?

1. Cordless drill.
2. New .40 cal. Bronze bore brush.
3. Powder solvent.
4. 0000 Extra Fine steel wool.

Chuck the bore brush in the drill and using solvent, spin it in each chamber for 30-45 seconds.
Clean with cotton patches and inspect.

If there is still traces of carbon, wrap some steel wool around the brush and do it again.

Guaranteed to remove all traces of carbon ring.
Guaranteed not to harm the gun in the slightest.

Some folks run a .357 case over the expander plug and flare it so wide it takes a push to get it in the chamber as a scraper.

I would use the steel wool as a last resort. If you want to spring for a few dollars, Brownells sells a gadget called a Lewis lead remover that will not only clean cylinder chambers but also the forcing cone and the barrel.

Of all the ways to do it, the fastest, and safest for the gun is to use a bronze chamber brush.

These are special extra-stiff, over sized brushes that will remove all fouling, usually in one pass.

To use, "screw" the brush into the chamber, then rotate it a turn or two, push it the rest of the way through, then pull it back out.

This eliminates setting up a drill, risking damage to the chambers, getting steel wool particles in the cylinder assembly or action, etc.

A brush does the job for me but that is a great tip

I would not consider using a drill or steel wool on ...

any of my revolvers , especially my beautiful Pythons. You can do much harm if you are not careful. A brush and some patience can remove the crud that has accumulated. Whatever you do , take it slow and easy.

Or remove the cylinder and let it soak for a while in your favorite bore solvent (or brake cleaner), then use the 40 brush in a cordless drill.....works great

I learned the Extra Fine steel wool & solvent trick in 1968 while gunsmithing K-38's for for the 5th. Inf AMU.
I have used it for the last 40 years without any problems whatsoever.

There is no risk, and it will not harm a gun.
