I bought a Police Positive Special at the gun show this weekend. I looked at Proofhouse for the date of birth and the serial number range is listed with a "D" prefix. I'm sure mine doesn't have a letter prefix, just numbers. The serial number is 9653xx. Is this a 1968?
Also, can I use +P ammo in this gun? By the way, it is a 4 inch barrel, good bluing, target grips, no ejector shroud. It locks up tight. Thanks.

Colt has a history of often being confusing on serial numbers with several models being numbered with the same range and some over-lapping numbers. I would guess that if your gun has no letter prefix it was made in 1966. There may be a similar gun out there with the exact same numbers and a D prefix made in 1968.

Others will disagree but I don't think factory +P will harm this gun since when it was made standard ammo was loaded to about the same pressure that the +Ps now use.
