I just received another Colt Single Action and everytime I pull one out of the safe to plink I am reminded of just why I love these pistolas. This one being a 44 special, 5.5" barrel, I just had to try it......

Lordy, my heart be still........:D:D:D:D

5 1/2" .44 Spl. huh?

Well then, I have a couple of questions.

Where exactly do you live?
When exactly, will you be gone from home?

:D

I've been looking for one of those for about 20 years.

Found a couple of 7 1/2" ones I didn't buy, but so far no luck on a shorter one I could afford.

I am more curious about how you arrange to "receive" interesting guns. A common internet form of acquisition, it seems.

Anything worthwhile I have took some looking and paying for.

When I got into CAS, I traded an obscure automatic and a good deal of boot for a 7 1/2" .44 Special SAA. I sought the cool factor and had a 4 3/4" barrel put on - along with a 44-40 cylinder to match my Winchester. I shot it for a season and then had the 7 1/2" put back on when I concluded I would rather hit the targets than look way kewl.

Ahhh, sweet memories. I sold my 44 Colts, in fact all my Colts, and went to clones before I broke my heart and my wallet in one motion. They do have an intrinsic charm to them though, don't they.

I have a short one - waited over 20 years to get it and am never gonna shoot the lil' thang:

The pic doesn't do the mellow yellow ivory grips justice.

Kewl has nothing to do with it in my case.
See, I've had 4 3/4", 5 1/2", and 7 1/2" SAA's.
I found I still wasn't very Kewl looking with any of them.

Many moons ago, I could shoot the long barrels better.
Now, I do way better with the short barrel guns.

I even still have the S&W Model 41 I shot in the service 40 years ago.

Always shot better scores with the 7 1/2" barrel then with the 5" one when I was young.
Now, it's just the opposite.

The other thing is, a 7 1/2" SAA is just hard to carry in a belt holster unless you are on a horse or walking.

I got tired of getting poked in the ribs in the truck.
And even worse, cleaning mud out of the muzzle after setting down while coyote calling and jambing it in the ground.

well here 2 second gens;one is a 1964 New Jersey Tercentenary SAA .45LC 5.5" I changed the ugly grips to a purty set. It is next to a 1973 New Frontier .44spl that is like a rifle to 50 meters! I let the Ruger Magnums hang out with them. I also have a .22 K Hornet 1916 Bisley made by Christy gun works in the 50s. I sold my first gen SAAs up to about 5 years ago for maximum $$ and I consolidated my collection to more modern.;)

5 1/2" barrel Colt SAAs in .44 Special are really lousy guns. They shoot two feet low at ten yards and rarely fire when their triggers are pulled. The actions are notchy and have 12 pound pulls. The grips don't fit human hands and the sights are ridiculous. Do not, I repeat, do not ever buy one of these guns. If you have one, sell it immediately, especially at a very low price just to get rid of it.

...cuz I need another one to match my 1982 fitted with Executioner's American Elk Stag handles.;)
