commercial mauser action for a build?

I would put in a plug for the Interarms Mark X action: this a full-length 98 Mauser action with all the sporterizing work done. Low bolt, adjustable trigger with a sliding safety, drilled and tapped for scope mount, a milled trigger guard with hinged floorplate, and no polishing work to get rid of pitting. As far as parts are concerned, it's a standard 98, interchangeable with any military production. I just did a search on GunBroker, and found a slew of complete rifles with stocks and scopes from less than $300 in standard calibers like .30-06 and .243 Winchester. As a start on a custom rifle in your choice of calibers, it's a vastly better economic choice than a military action AT TODAYS Prices. I've got a number of Vz 22 and Vz 24 rifles stashed away to eventually build into custom guns, but I bought them years ago when they were cheap. And the only one that has actually gotten built so far is on a Mark X action, because it just made more sense.

I used a K98. Sent it to ershaw and they installed the 24" #3 contour fluted barrel in 308. Installed the new teardrop bolt handle and a Comercial shroud and drilled and tapped it for scope base. I think It all cost me about 600 bucks. I put the shim hole varminter from Boyd's on it with a timney and a tubbs firing pin.

The commercial FN Mauser actions were listed under 2 names. The first one was called a "De Luxe" action and had a safety lever on the cocking piece with a push button magazine cover release and I think it was built from about 1947 up until about 1970. The second variation was called a "Supreme" and had a trigger safety on the right side of the receiver and a hinged floor plate with a small latch in front of the trigger. The second version was built for several years beginning about 1970. In the past I have had rifles built using both types. They make great rifles and Timney has a trigger that fits. A far easier way to build a rifle is to use a pre 64 Model 70 Winchester action. One could be purchased about as cheap as a Mauser and parts are more readily available and price depends on the quality of the item. I have built rifles on both type actions and for my money the Winchester is the way to go. If you go with either a commercial FN Mauser or Winchester action they will hold their value better than Mauser actions made in other countries.

My understanding form what I have read on other sites is that the 550 action is not going away only the 550 American complete rifle.

Update: found this today: http://www.africahunting.com/threads/help-save-the-cz-550.12550/page-2
CZ has responded to my request for information. There response shows me that they are interested in their customers. I've attached it below

A few years ago the factory decided to develop a push-feed version of the 550 action, resulting in the 557. Their reasoning was that the controlled round feed of the Mauser action is most important on the dangerous game rifles, not necessarily on the medium game chamberings.

A big reason for the change was that they would be able to bring production of the 557 fully in-house. The 550 actions are milled from forgings and are supplied by an outside vendor, while the new 557 is CNCed from steel billet at our factory. This removes the supply issue that at times hampered production on the 550, as well as enables us to tighten tolerances and produce a more precise product. It also enables us to have a true short-action platform for the .308, .243 and .22-250, which we've been wanting for some time.

Most importantly, while the Mauser action has many devoted fans, sales of the standard 550 have dropped off substantially over the years. We will continue to produce a number of standard 550s for 2014, but the main focus in CZ-USA's medium rifle category will be the 557. We have no plans to get rid of the 550 Magnum.

The 557 is a premium push-feed rifle and we're proud to add it to the lineup. Combined with our cold hammer forged and lapped barrel, it'll be an excellent gun for anything from prairie dogs to moose.

Thanks!

I did the same kind of thing. I turned an old Yugo M48 action into a very nice sporter in 6.5x55. If I had it to do over again, Howa sells barreled actions and they chamber one in 6.5x55 and that's what I should have done. Would have been cheaper than having an old Mauser action modified, barreled, and then the whole thing reblued.

@ Olympus.
I feel the Yugo action is a better action, but a Howa is a very good action.
But being able to do all my own work including Bluing tends to make me a little Bias, and able to cut the cost of a custom way down.

But I am really leaning towards getting a CZ 557 Carbine when they are availabe later this year.
I would buy the complete rifle and build a custom stock for it, chop off some of the barrel and add a muzzle break for starters.
.308 chopped to 18" with a break Better Iron sights, and a scope
That would be a nice brush gun.

For the OP , that might also be an action worth waiting for.
And they make it in 6.5x55 also if that is the desired caliber .
