I was talking to a friend the other day and I was telling him I am tired of flip flopping platforms and I want to pick one and really train. I am going in a few days and we are going to do some range work to help me find where I should place my focus. The guns I will be taking are a 642, 3" Model 13 k frame, Glock 19 and a S&W 3913.
3913 - Slim, accurate, and having owned the longest amount of time Im familar with it. The only downside I find is the transition from DA to SA.
642 - easy to carry in any position and all the time. I feel if I can put shots on target then 5 will be enough. I dont worry so much dominate hand at self defense distance but weak hand and at more utility distance my accuracy falls off.
13 - again there is capacity but Im confident I can place rounds on target. Guns only had 100 rounds through it and I cant bring myself to put it in kydex.I am a little hesitant to carry this gun only because its too nice and I worry about working a blued gun. This one is a top contender.
Glock 19 - Accuracy, capacity and I have the most holsters and mags etc to accomadate. The only thing I dont like about the 19 is I wish the barrel was shorter for AIWB because it presses against a nerve in my leg but so does the 3913.

I have owned a 26 and for some reason I always let it go. I for some reason convince myself that I shoot my 19 better and "there isnt that much difference" between the two. However with the 19 pressing against my nerve causing pain that maybe there is difference. Also the height difference makes a 26 dissapear in deep cover such as a smartcarry or belly band as well as only under a t shirt. I am wondering if I should commit to training with the 26. If there will be times that I carry my 642 instead of my 19 maybe it would make since to have and train with a 26. I like the 19 and will carry it I just know there are times like during the work week that I cant swing it. With a 26 I have 10 in stock mag and 15-17 in a spare mag. Instead of 5 in gun and 5-10 on speed strips. Dont get me wrong none of these guns are going any where. I just think its time to pick my poison and stick with it. Size, capacity, round count etc. its hard to beat Im just trying to decide it a 26 is it.

The deciding factor is going to be if I run the revolver or the semi better in defense drills.
We will see

Considerations

I ask why you carry and where you travel.

AND what is your worst case scenario.

I am retired LEO,and my WORST case scenario is a Mumbai type attack in a mall [ shopping with wife ] or movie theater,or other large venue.

I/we tend to go to fewer large venues than when we were young.

BUT no longer having the ability to 'run & gun' as I did as a young man,I feel the need for a good supply of ammo in gun AND a fast reload.

My choices are [ in the safe ] greater than yours, but I go with a Glock 23 in .40 S&W and 13 + 1 rounds in gun and spare model 22 mags on belt. This is 90% of the time, others include the G-19 & Kimber CDP II & Super Custom Carry.

SO, I ask you what your carry scenarios are, and are you training for them ?.

I have two small children and a wife. I plan for all four of us to make it home each night. The more common scenarios I would see us facing would be shopping center parking lot/malls, wild dog, armadillo, resturant scenario. Yes I am planning to choose a platform and then instead of focusing on platform to focus time and money on training.

Is this where I point out your failure in devoting yourself to the 1911? :neener:

I like the concept, and think you'll do well to work on mastering one platform for a while. If I was starting over I'd seriously consider devoting myself to the Glock or one of the other polymer pistols. I don't like them much, but I can't deny their advantages, nor can I complain that others who've put the time in to master the platform seem to do quite well with it.

To me, reload speed can matter quite a bit. I can reload a bottom feeder much faster than I can a revolver.

Whichever way you go, I don't think any of your potential choices is a bad one. Figure out what you prefer and master it. I don't think you'll ever regret the effort, even if you decide to change platforms in the future. You know, to something more worthwhile, like a Browning design.

Yes this would be the place to mention that. If Im hesitant to carry a blued 3" k frame model 13 I certainly dont see myself being able to carry a 1911 that cost twice as much.

I'm not sure which defensive drill you are going to base you decision on, however I'd like to offer a couple which are easy and test the gun handling skills I consider important. I've carried all 4 of the guns you've listed

First the Bill Drill - very simple and it will show you which gun you will be most acurate and consistent with.
1. At 7 yards
2. Shooting at an 8" paper plate
3. On a buzzer, from concealment, gun loaded with 6 rounds
4. Draw and fire 6 shots onto the plate...you may have to adjust for the J-frame
5. See which platform you are fastest with...only compare runs where all the shots are on the plate.

Then the F.A.S.T. drill - also pretty simple and it evaluates target acqusition, trigger management, the mag change, target transitions
1. 7 yards
2. 8" plate (body) and 3" x 5" card (head)
3. On buzzer, from concealment, gun loaded with 2 rounds
4. Draw and fire 2 shots to the head, reload, fire 4 shots to the body

10+ seconds: Novice
less than 10 seconds: Intermediate
less than 7 seconds: Advanced
less than 5 seconds: Expert
